'Pigi Four THE JEWISH NEWS As the Editor Views the News - - What's Wrong With Bilbo?. Last week, Sen. Theodore G. Bilbo of Mississippi again was in the limelight, as a result of a letter he had addressed to an Italian woman as "My dear Dago." Asked for an apology, Sen. Bilbo stated that the woman-=Miss Josephine Piccolo of Brook- lyn, N. J.—"has not attempted to correct the salutation that I used," and added: "Yes, I will apologize to Josephine Piccolo if she will withdraw over her own signature her nasty, insulting, pussilanimous letter to me and apologize for writing it." Now we have another outburst—this time involving the Jews. In a letter to reonard F. Golditch of the National Com- mittee to Combat Anti-Semitism, Sen. Bilbo makes the statement that "if you would quit lining up with these Communists and Negroes in New York City, who are. trying to put throUgh the American Con- gress such fool, crack-brain, legislative monstrosities. as FEPC and so forth, you would not need a committee to combat anti-Semitism. You are doing your race a great injustice by the company you are keeping. To be frank with you, you are riding for a fall." * * * The letter to Golditch declares that "if Jews of your type don't quit sponsoring and fraternizing with Negro race you are going to arouse so much opposition to all of you that they will get a very strong invitation to pack up and resettle in Pales- tine, the homeland of the Jews, just as we propose to provide for the voluntary re- settlement of the American Negro in West Africa, their fatherland. Now do not pop- off and say that I am in favor of sending the Jews to Palestine. What I am trying to say to you- is that there are_ / just a few of you New York Jew `kikes' that are fraternizing and socializing with Negroes for selfish and political reasons and if you keep it up . you will arouse the opposition of the better class of your own race." These are shocking manifestations of venom which must cause fair-minded Americans to . ask: What's the matter with Sen. Bilbo? Is this the way to build good will among all citizens of our land? Doesn't the Mississippi Senator know that the Civil War has been over for more than 80 years and that a great Land of Freedom does not deport nearly fourteen million Negroes to Africa • and can not ask an additional five million Jews to go to Palestine? * * * There is something wrong with. the think- ing of Sen. Bilbo. We doubt whether his Southern ancestors would have approved of the hatred he displays for people of another color and for those who champion the rights of men, women and children of another race. Sen. Bilbo._ is especially wrong when he imagines that a "better class" of Jews will turn against those who are fighting for justice for the Negroes. Americans of all faiths have learned to know that once it is permitted that a small group in the population should be persecuted, the rights of all citizens will be at stake. He can rest assured that Jews will be found on the side of all persecuted minorities and that we shall never deviate from a course of action which calls for the defense of all persecuted groups, regardless of their color, creed or nationality background. Renewal of Terror in Poland A very disturbing situation exists in Poland where nine Jews were murdered and scores were injured during the past two months. Anti-Semitic hooligan bands have attack- ed Jewish homes and the situation is admittedly grave. The Polish Minister of Information and Propaganda, Stefan Matuszewski, has given assurances in Warsaw that strong measures are being taken by the Polish government to suppress the anti-Semites' hoodlumism. This assurance was given to a Jewish delegation that was headed by Dr. Emil Sommerstein and Dr. Adolph Berman of the Central Committee for Polish Jews. In his statement, Matuszewski disclosed to the Jewish delegation that 58 death sentences were passed on Polish pogromists for attacks on Jews during May and Junk. The very admission of the existence of terrorism, now that returning Jews are trusting to Polish honor to provide guarantees of liberty and of security against Nazi methods, reveals a continuation of a tragedy for Jews. It is imperative that-the United Nations leaders step in to put an end to these outrages and that Polish leaders should make it the first important point in their reconstruc- tion program to make it impossible for gangsterism to exist in what all hope will be a "free Poland." Great Britain's New Government How many Negro Protestants and Roman Catholics are there in the U. S.—R.S. There are approximately 5,500,000 Negro Pro- testants and 310,000 Negro Catholics. An esti- mated 7,000,000 Negroes do not belong to any church. * * What part did Ahmed Jemal Plasha play in combating Zionism?—T. T. Ahmed Jemal Pasha, Turkish stateman and general, who commanded the fourth Turkish army in Syria and Palestine, 1914 to 1917, used , h:s power to fight Zionism to which he had been hostile as a Turkish nationalist. He banished the non-Ottomanized Palestinian Jews, executed Jews suspected of disloyalty to Turkey and destroyed Zionist institutions. He lost his power at the end of World War,I. He was murder,ed in Tiflis in 1922. * * * What articles were kept-in the Ark of the Covenant?—S. M. Aaron's rod that budded, the golden pot that had manna, and the tablets of the covenant. In the time of Solomon it appears that all of these relics had disappeared except "the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb." * * * What are the Gideon Bibles?--B. R. A. Children's Corner Dear Boys and Girls: A great Jewish poetess, Jessie E. Sampter, once wrote a beautiful poem on Bar Mitzvah, It is so beautiful that it should be read by all—young and old. And it is applicable not only to Bar Mitzvahs but to all Jews on all occasions. It reads: We are the children of the Law, Our honor is that we obey. By truths our sires at Sinai saw Our lives are sanctified to-day. Our promise is that we shall lead Because we learned the Law in youth. Our name is princely, and our creed Is simple: that the Lord is truth. Before long, we will be preparing for the re- aliening of school and the commencement of the High Holidays. In the meantime, I hope_you are all enjoying your vacations. The High Holy Days come early—and so will Hanukah, which will begin on Thursday night, Nov. 29. I mention this so that those who plan to send packages to servicemen overseas should plan to do so early—AT ONCE! Calendar 'Reform':. Menace Hawaii's delegate in the U. S. House of Representatives, Joseph. R. Farringtop, has introduced a resolution urging the adoption of a so-called uniform "perpetual" calendar. The revival of this propsal, which seriously disturbed American Jewry about 15 years ago, calls for vigilant and prompt action on the part of those who are concerned that the existing calendar should not be disturbed. Mr. Farrington would have the nations of the world act on his suggestion at the peace conference, and Congress- man Sol Bloom, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, before whom the calendar resolution is now pending, was quick in warning that such reforms would not only result in confusion generally but also in religious persecution and economic difficulties. The point for Jewish leaders to keep. in view is that reform of the calendar, as proposed by a vociferous group in this country and elsewhere, would disturb the fixity of the Sabbath. It would mean that from year to year the Sabbath would fall on days other than Saturday and would create havoc in the ranks of Sabbath observers. Not only Jews, but Seventh Day Adventists and others who observe Saturday as the Sabbath would be affected by such "reforms." The proposal must be fought and proper steps must be taken to urge members of Congress to oppose it. Meanwhile the son visited many countries and sold at a large profit all the goods he had taken with him. At last he was ready to return, eagerly looking forward to seeing again his dear father whom he imagined to be still alive and well. On approaching his deStination a violent storm arose. The ship was at the mercy of the winds and waves and though a great deal of cargo was thrown overboard to lighten the vessel it was driven on to the rocks and became a total wreck. All the crew were drowned and only the young man was tossed ashore bruised and bleeding, thankful to have escaped with his bare life. When he reached home, a surprise awaited him. Not only did he learn that his beloved father was no more, but the servant whom he found in- stalled in the house pretended not to know him and treated him as an imposter. The young man went to the Judge of the place and told his story. The servant was summoned, and he protested that he was the merchant's son and the complainant was a complete stranger. The Judge looked from one to the other. and then said: "Bring me the dead man's bones. From them I shall be able to tell which of you is speaking the truth." Then the son exclaimed: "No, let him keep all that he has but do not disturb my father's re- mains." "You are the rightful heir," said the wise Judge. The faithless servant was flung into prison and the 5011 entered upon his inheritance.
