NEW YORK—A first-hand re-
port on the condition of Jews in
the Allied occupation zone in
Austria has been received by
the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee from its Rome representative,
Reuben Resnik.
Resnik on July 16 completed
an extensive survey of condi-
tions among the Jews in Austria
and made a cabled report from
Switzerland.
"With the aid of the military
authorities," the report said, "the
JDC has been able to transfer
approximately 3,000 Jews from
Austria to various Italian cities
from where they will be helped
to emigrate to Palestine, since
many of them are potential can-
didates for Palestine entry certi-
ficates."

closed that 5,000 Jews are living
in and outside Austria's liberated

Terrorists Disrupt
Palestine Rail Travel
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—All rail-
way traffic between Palestine

week by the destruction of a
railroad bridge near the Arab
village of Yibneh. Police, using
bloodhounds, tracked those res-
ponsible for blasting the bridge
to the market place in the colony
of Rehovoth where the trail was
lost.

Frank Eck of the Associated
Press tells us that Goody Rosen
isn't too pleased over the way he
has been treated by the Brook-

that Goody has been playing a
bang-up game afield and at bat
the Brain, _ Branch Rickey, hasn't
as yet seen fit to call Rosen in
and offer him a new contract.
Rosen is probably the most un-
derpaid ball player in the league
today. He was signed at a sub-
stitute's salary but has been go-
ing so well that he rates star
money now. In cases like this
the management usually tears up
a player's contract and offers
him a better one. ..Rickey, a
penny nurser from way back, is
slow to follow this procedure.

The New York Giants are no
longer hiding the fact that Phil
Weintraub is on the way out.
Scouts are frantically searching
for a replacement- and it is only
a matter of time before he is
dropped. We mentioned two
weeks ago that he was consid-
ered through by Mel Ott. Another
verbal fight with Van Mungo
hasn't smoothed matters out.
Right now the small • but hefty
belting Danny Gardella is filling
in for the Jewish, boy. Although
Mike Schemer is doing_ a' great '
job at Jersey City the Giants are
still going elsewhere for a first
base replacement.
- Les Scarsella of Oakland was
all set for the Giants but at the
last moment Les refused a $12,000
contract to leave the Pacific
Coast. It seems Phil- has slowed

had four streaks of at least 11
games apiece where he hit safely
and has not been stopped two
days in a row. He has batted in
