ACTIVITIES IN SOCIETY

Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Hayden of 2321 Oakman Blvd. will celebrate
their golden wedding anniversary on Aug. 6, at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel in New York, with their children, Mr. and Mrs. Myer Gerson
and Norman B. Hayden.

ah, have returned to Ft. _Benning, Ga., after spending
with family and friends. Lt. Grant's sister, Lillian Grunt, is join-
ing them for the summer, after which she will return to complete
her senior year at the University of Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Nath-
an Grunt gave a dinner party in honor of their son's birthday which
occurred during his stay here. Mrs. Grant was entertained by her
sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Krohner of Gladstone Ave.
Regene Ann Garelik of 18503 Fairfield Ave. has returned from
a five&week visit with her brother-in-law and sister, A/C Andrew
A. and Mrs. Blau, of Del Rio, Texas, where A/C Blau is stationed.
She is now in Charlevoix, Mich.
In honor of their nephew, Capt. Peter Martin USAMC, his
wife and small daughter, Arlene, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Fisher of St.
Mary's Ave. entertained at a family dinner in their home last Sat-
urday evening. Capt. Martin has just returned from 11 months
duty in Europe. .
Lt. (jg) and Mrs. Norman P. Greenblatt have left for San Fran-
cisco, Calif., where he will report for duty with the Naval
Dental Corps. Lt. Greenblatt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry J.
Greenblatt of Fairfield Ave.
S 2/c Peter Globerson is home on leave from Great Lakes
and is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. Globerson of Leslie Ave.
S. 2/c David Rappoport has reported back to the Great Lakes
Naval Training Center following his 9 day leave spent with his
mother, Mrs. Minnie Ra -nnonort in Detroit and his brother-in-law
and sister, Dr. and Mrs. H. M. Wilensky in London, Ont.
Capt. Peter A. Martin, a psychiatrist with the 104th Infantry
Division, was entertained during his recent leave in Detroit. He
has just returned from 11 months in Europe and is being rede-
ployed to the Pacific. Among the events in his honor were a din-
ner and luncheon .given by his sister, Mrs. Allen L. Pick, and his
mother, Mrs. Rebecca Martin of Fullerton Ave.; a reception by his
in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Sam D. Munch of Atkinson Ave. and a din-

ner by his aunt, Mrs. Abraham Primack of Otsego Ave.
Capt.
and Mrs. Martin and their daughter, Arlene, are now en route to
San Luis Obispo, Calif., where Capt. Martin will be stationed tem-
porarily.
Lt. Philip E. Lachman who has received an honorable dis-
charge after 39 months in the army, will be back home in Detroit in
a few days.
Sgt. Morey Patrick, who recently returned after a year and a
half of service with the 8th Air•Force, is spending his 30 day fur-
lough with his wife, Rose, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Israel Patrick
of 2948 Vinewood. His parents will hold open house for friends
and relatives on Sunday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 10 p. in. No cards.
Mrs. Selma. Schwartz and small son have left to join their hus-
band and father, Dr. Marvin Schwartz, in Portland, Ore., where they
will take up residence. Dr. Schwartz has resumed his practice of
internal medicine with offices in the Medical Arts Bldg. there.
Ensign Melvin M. Gerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aleck H. Gerson,
arrived home from the Pacific for a 30-day leave. He is visiting
with his wife, daughter and parents. On Aug. 8, Ensign Gerson will
return to the Pacific.
Ensign Warren Shwayder, who has been stationed at Miami
Beach, Fla., spent a week with his parents, -Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin
Shwayder of Fairfield Ave., before going to New York City.
Pfc. Jack D. Hamburger recently returned from six months
service in Europe, is spending a 30-day furlough with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hamburger of Chicago BlVd., after which
he will report to Camp Grant, Ill., for re-assignMent.
Lt. Morris Mersky, who recently returned from service with
the 15th Air Force in Italy, is spending his 30-day leave with
Mrs. Mersky and their small daughter at the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Saul Saulson of Broadstreet Blvd. Lt. Mersky is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mersky of Clairmount Ave.
Pvt. Herbert F. Grayson, who has completed his basic train-
ing at Fort Sill, Okla., is spending a week with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Grayson of Royal Oak, before returning to Fort
Sill, where he will attend Officers Candidate School.
Cpl. Walter Strauss, who has returned from seven months
service in Europe, is spending his 30-day furlough with Mrs. Strauss
at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Alexander
of Burlingame Ave. He will leave for California for amphibious
training.
Cpl. and Mrs. William Lester, guests at the Statler Hotel, are
spending a few weeks in the city visiting with their families. Cpl.
Lester, who recently returned from 30 months in India, is on a
30-day furlough. Mrs. Lester has been making her home in Cali-
fornia while her husband was overseas.
Cpl. Rolf Manko, who has been stationed at Corpus Christie,
Tex., is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ruben Manko of Calvert Ave.
Sgt. Sidney Bernstein of New York City, who recently has
returned from two years service in Europe and is on a 30-day
furlough, spent 10 days with his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and
Mrs. Herbert Bernstein of Chicago Blvd.
Pfc. Earl David Roberts, on Transport Duty with the Medical
Corps, spent a 14-day furlough with his wife and daughter of
LaSalle Blvd.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fleischman and their son, Mickey, have
moved from Cambridge Rd. and are now residing at 300
Whitmore Rd.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hopp and family have moved from Edison
Ave: and now are residing at 2535 Boston Blvd. •
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kay of Warrington Ave. have left for
Los Angeles, Cal., where they plan to _make their home.

George Jessel, who has been
in vaudeville, pictures and radio,
and at various times has been
toastmaster, author, father and
film producer, has now added
another feather to his already
crowded cap. - lie is signed to
write a series of stories for Es-
quire magazine.

Sophie Tucker is cutting , up a
$34,000 melon to theatrical and
other charities. The money was
gained through sales of 1,500 of
the $25 deluxe editions of her
autobiography, "Some of These
Days."

Oscar Serlin's "Life With Fa-
ther" (recently purchased by
Warner Brothers) has moved in-
to second place on the list of all-
time Broadway hits. Recently
ringing down the curtain on its
2,383rd performance it broke the
performance record of "Able's
Irish Rose" and moved into posi-
tion behind "Tobacco Road",
which still holds first place with
3,182 showings. "Father" has
grossed $4,000,000 during its
five-and-a-half-year run and has
been seen by two-and-a-half
lion people!

Hollywood is saluting Warner
Brothers for having contributed
to this war more than effort,
more than money, more than
will; they have contributed men
and women. More than 25 percent
of the company's employes,
some 4,045, are still on active
duty of 4,364 who joined the
services. 784 of these were from
the Hollywood studio. Sixty-one
were killed in action.

The GIs have voted Dinah
Shore their No. 1 femme voice,
almost three to one, in the sec-
ond annual G. I. music survey.

A Hollywood minister, preach-
ing a charity sermon, promised:
"I shall be brief. My text: 'He
that giveth unto the poor lend-
eth unto the Lord.' Brethren, you
have heard the terms of the loan.
If you are satisfied with the se-
curity, put down your cash."

BUCHAREST, (JTA) — Contr-
ary to rumors which are report-
ed to be current in the U. S. and
Palestine, Dr. William Filder-
man and other Romanian Jewish
leaders have not been arrested,
and are continuing to perform
their communal functions. Dr.
Filderman is still the representa-
tive of the Joint Distribution
Committee here, president of the
Union of Romanian Jews, and
chairman of the Federation of
Romanian Jewish Communities.
A. L. Zissu, another of those
reported to have been arrested,
'remains the leader of the Jew-
ish Party and the Romanian sec-
tion of the World Jewish Con-
gress. He is no longer head of
the Jewish Agency office here.
M. Manulescu, who is a vice-
president of the Union of Roman-
ian Jews, and Dr. S. Cupper, two
others who were rumored to be
under arrest, are in some dif-.
ficulties with the authorities, but
have not been arrested.
Manulescu was forced by Lecca
to head a committee of Jews in
the professions which was com-
pelled to raise 4,000,000,000 lei
towards the huge collective
fines imposed upon they Jewish
community. He is reported to
be a convert to Christianity.
(A report reaching London
states that Michael Landau, a for-
mer deputy in the Romanian
parliament and one-time editor
and publisher of the Kishinev
Yiddish daily "Unzer Tzait," has
been sentenced to five years in
Bucharest for alleged collabora7
tion with the Antonescu Govern-
ment.)

mony in the presence of the im-
mediate families.
The young couple are spending
a few weeks in Charlevoix after
which they will visit his family
in Memphis, Tenn.
Capt. Scheinberg, who has re-
cently returned from two years'
service in the ETO with the
Medical Corps, is on a 60-day
leave before being re-assigned.

BOOKSTEIN-HOFFMAN: On
July 29 Celia Mae Hoffman of
9703 N. Martindale and Harold
(Jimmy) Bookstein, Electrician's
Mate Third Class, United States
Naval Reserve, were joined in
wedlock at the residence of Rabbi
L. Levin of 3265 Burlingame.
Immediately after the ceremony,
a reception was held at the home
of the bride's mother, Mrs. Anna
Hoffman of 9703 N. Martindale,
which was attended by members
of both families and many friends.
The bride was attired in a
beautiful gown fashioned of a
white gathered jersey bodice,
sweetheart neckline trimmed in
white netting, short gathered
sleeves, low fitted torso, and a
full flared white net skirt. The
matching veil of a white netting
crown with rosettes on each side,
was waist length. The groom
wore his Navy uniform with the
campaign ribbons and battle
stars, representing his past three
years in the Naval Service.
The young couple have tem-
porarily set up housekeeping at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Icek
Bookstein of 3380 Glynn Ct.
while the latter are in Mount
Clemens.
