Key for Creative Writing in
the national contest of the Quill

following quotation from his
"Amulet of the Future" gives
expresSion to his sentiments of
the subject:

"For this is the very same amulet
that was carried by many before
your time. .
Judah - of the Maccabees bore it
against the foul Antiochus
Robespierre held it In the mighty
roar of Annus Mirabilis
Tiberius Gracchus graspt it. . .Oliver
Cromwell . . . Washington had
it at Valley Forge . .and a rail-
splitter named Abe 'Lincoln. •
and Walt Whitman, who sang of
it always . and Theodor Herzl
and
And ih'eraeare''‘gsosseeall'ocia:y who bear
it still: honor and cherish it. .
Their names are familiar ones ; names
that touch our ears and hearts
often..
Look upon this wondrous amulet,
you, who are about to go—
See those words engraven upon it
Words that remain, ever-present. . .
Indestructible, indelible, immortal:
Truth and Freedom.
Equality of Opportunity.
Brotherhood and Open Mind."

An ardent member of Habon-
im, Labor Zionist Youth Organ-
ization, all of his leisure hours
are devoted to aiding in the
redemption of Eretz Yisroel as
a Jewish Commonwealth, based
on social justice. Hyram is pre-
paring for Aliyah to Palestine
to participate in the glorious
upbuilding of a nation and a
land reborn..
Hyrarn's poem, The Bigot, was
included in the annual volume
of the National High School
Poetry Association, and his
prolific writings have been given
wide publication.

Sye Zeldis of 2310 W. Grand
Blvd., is a 1945 Magna cum Laude
Graduate of Central High School.
