Mothers' Clubs Council
Urges Members Vote Aug. 6
The Council of Mothers' Clubs
reminds its members that the
primary elections for Mayor and
City Council will take place on
Monday, Aug. 6. Those who will
be out of town for their vaca-
tions on that day, may stop in at
the City Hall, Supervisor of
Elections' office, and will re-
ceive an absentee ballot, which
can be filled out there, or send
in from wherever one happens
to be. The Mothers' Clubs
Council feels that it is more im-
portant to vote in the primaries
than in the general election.

in London, Lists Many
Victims of Nazis
---
By OTTO SCHICK
LONDON, (JTA)—Chief Rabbi
Leo Baeck of Berlin, who has
just arrived from Theresienstadt
after a short stay in Paris, re-
vealed that he is the only sur-
vivor of the pre-war Jewish lead-
ers of Germany. and Austria.
Dr. Otto Hirsch, executive di-
rector of the "Reichsvertretung"
of German Jews, died in the
Mauthausen. camp, Dr. Baeck
said, while other officials of the
central body, including Dr. Ar-
thus Lilienthal, a one-time Ber-
lin judge, Dr. Cora Berliner and
Hanna Karminsky were deport-
ed to Poland.
Dr. Paul Epstein, another lead-
er of . the organization, died in
Oswiecim. The Austrian • Jew-
ish leaders who • died or were
Murdered included Robert Strick-
er, prominent Zionist (whose son
is now in the U. S. Army), and
Dr. Desider Friedman, president
of the Vienna Jewish community
at the time of •the Anschluss.
Dr. Baeck said that the flame
of Jewish learning "'was kept
burning even while deportations
were in full swing. "What was
done between 1939 and 1944 will
go down in history as, perhaps,
the outstanding achievement of
the doomed German-Jewish corn-
munity," Dr. Baeck said.
Tremendous difficulties had to
be overcome during this period
in arranging classes for children,
who were scattered over wide
areas, he said, but they were
br6ught to community centers
and then transported home. This
continued until July, 1942, when
all Jewish instruction and reli-
gious services were banned.

Berlin Jews Make
Urgent Plea for
Help for Hospital
By HENRY BRADLEY
(Special Wire to Jewish News)
BERLIN (JTA) — Leaders of
the few thousand Jews remaining
in Berlin appealed to Jewish
communities abroad to send re-
lief, especially medicaments. The
appeal was made through the J.
T. A. correspondent by Dr. Erich
Zwilsky, head of the Berlin
Jewish Hospital which became
informal center for Jewish mat-
ters. The hospital is faced by
shortage of doctors, nurses and
medicines. The 10 doctors on the
staff is handicapped by lack of
instruments and medicaments.
X-ray ,apparatus 'is intact but
films are unavailable, although a
small amount of radium is on
hand.
Dr. Zwilsky said that between
1938 to the day Berlin was cap-
tured 2,000 Jews committed sui-
cide here to escape deportation.
In March of this year, just prior
to capitulation an order was
given for the hospital's liquida-
tion but for some reason was
never carried out. Although strict
guard was kept occasionally the
hospital's doct" were able to
save Jews from deportation by
inducing false symptoms of se-
vere illness.
