37 Governors Urge Truman
Help Open Palestine Doors
Petition Bearing Signatures of State Executives Attending
Conference at Mackinac Island Sent President;
Immediate Action Asked of 'Big Three'
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (JTA)—President Truman was
asked by the gOvernors. of 37 states to take immediate steps to
open Palestine "to Jewish mass immigration and colonization, and
to bring about the earliest transformation of that country into a
free and _democratic Jewish Commonwealth.",
A petition bearing the signatures of the 37 state executives—
including Gov. H. F. Kelly of Michigan—is on its way to President
Truman, accompanied by a covering letter from Gov. Herbert
B. Maw of Utah expressing hope that the President will discuss
ways and means to achieve this with Prime Minister Churchill and
Marshal Stalin at the Big Three conference in Berlin.
Gov. Maw, who, initiated the petition with Governors Dewey
of Ned York, Tobin of Massachusetts, Baldwin of Connecticut;
and McGrath of Rhode Island, released its text today at the close
of the' Governors' conference here at which he presided.
"Concerned as it is with the position of the Jewish people
in Europe and the future of the Jewish National Home in Pales-
tine, we believe that this petition raises matters of immediate
and far-reaching humanitarian and political importance," the ac-
companying letter declares.
"The considerations which prevented action in regard to these
pressing issues while war still raged in Europe, no longer applies.
The urgency of the Jewish problem and its solution in Palestine
has become such that I venture the earnest hope that it may be
thought opportune to give attention to this question in the
course of your forthcoming conversations with the Prime. Minister
of Great Britain and Marshal Stalin."

Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith has
War Service Fund which is to be utilized in en-
tertaining the servicemen stationed at the Romu-
lus Air Base. The committee in 'charge of the
fund, under the chairmanship of Archie Katcher
and Irving Reiter, arranged its first party at
the base. It met' with such success that the com-
manding officer expressed his gratitude in a let-
ter written to the lodge. They also received a
note from Cpl. Sako, himself a Ben Brith, tell-
ing how much these servicemen, most of whom
• had been in the European Theater and are now
on their way to the Pacific, appreciated the
party and how much it did to raise the morale.

At Camp Habonim
Irving Reiter made a special trip to Chicago
to arrange for the shipment of Meat to Romulus
for these affairs. On June 19, a carnival was
arranged by the committee, including a beauti-
fully served meal with an abundance of all kinds
of food. Gifts were supplied to all of the ser-
vicemen and women..
Again a letter of thanks was received, this
time from Capt. Daniel C. Park, chief of the
Personnel Service Unit, in which he lauds the
committee and suggests that it would be "very
nice" if another' such party could be planned
in tht near future.
