Answers to Readers'
Questions About Jews

The Children's Tragedy

British Colonial Secretary Oliver Stanley
has
the plea made_ by Mrs. Israel
Sieff, president of the WIZO (Women's In-
ternational Zionist Organization) , in behalf
Of Jewish women's organizations in England,
that Great Britain should transfer to Pales-
tine the Jewish orphans who are now in con-
centration camps in Europe.
Calling into play the horrible restrictions
of the British White Paper, Col. Stanley
stated that no category of Jewish immigrants
can be excluded from the regular immigra-
tion quota, and that the Jewish Agency may,
if it wishes, utilize available certificates for
the orphans.
An appeal in behalf of the orphans by
Lord Strabolgi in the British House of Lords
also was denied, and frantic calls for help
from many groups—Jewish and non-Jewish
—had fallen on deaf ears.
* * *
The question may well be asked: what
about the available certificates? why aren't
they used for the orphans?
The statement in the House of Lords by
Lord Strabolgi, published elsewhere in this
issue. of The Jewish News, is self-eXplana-
tory. There are many tens of thousands of
people who. are waiting for certificates to
go to Palestine, and included among them
are 20,000 orphaned Jewish • children in
France alone. To relieve them, only 6,000
visas .are available now to the Jewish
Agency.
A tragic story is related with regard to
the transfer of a group of Jewish children
to France from Nazi concentration camps
by Capt. Robert S. Marcus, U. S. Chaplain,
former New York rabbi. It is revealed in a
report cabled to the New York Herald-
Tribune by its Paris correspondent, Carl
Levin, that some of these children "appar-
ently are to be assimilated into the French
population withoout regard for their religi-
ous and national background" and that many
children, who came from Orthodox Jewish
families in Central Europe, "have been con-
verted to other religions."
* * *
Jewish leaders are negotiating for the
transfer of these orphans, and OSE officials
have expressed the hope that the French
government eventually will turn them over
to them. A special effort is being made to
secure the release of 92 children who have
placed in the. custody of the ministry of
prisoners and deportees, and it is revealed
also that 240 more are at the Hallersloben
camp and are awaiting the opportunity to
go to Palestine.
A bright spot in this situation is the state-
ment this week by Dr. Joseph C. Hyman,
executive vice-president of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, on the basis of a cable
from the Lisbon JDC office, that 156 Jewish
children who had endured the horrors of
various German concentration camps, and
whose parents and close relatives are dead
or missing, are en route to-Palestine.
This encouraging news, which attests to
the great service rendered by the JDC, re-
lieves the tension only in small measure. We
must not lull ourselves into smug satisfac-
tion by the news that 156 had been rescued
and taken to Palestine. It is a question of
saving tens of thousands. Until large-scale
immigration is attained, the entire civilized
world stands indicted in heartlessness for
permitting Great Britain to keep Palestine's
doors closed to these unfortunates.

1. What is the Fast of Tammuz? 2. What is
the significance of the observance of the
Three Weeks? —L. U.
1. The Fast of Tammuz, occurring on the 17th
day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, to be ob-
served next Thursday, is the day on which
Nebuchadnezzar broke the wall of Jerusalem
leading up to the destruction of the Temple on
Tisha b'Ab. Tradition also has it that on the 17th
of Tammuz the tablets were broken by Moses
when he discovered that in his absence the Israel-
ites began to worship the golden calf.
2. The Three Weeks represent the period of
mourning—from the 17th of Tammuz to Tisha
b'Ab, in memory of the period of destruction, :I
the loss of Jewish statehood. Orthdox Jews
stain from amusements, weddings may not be pc.—
formed during this period and the spirit of mourn-
ing prevails because of the calamity that had be-
fallen Israel.

Why is the lion the favorite decorative
Jewish ornament in the synagogue, on the
ark, on mantels and curtains?—S.D.D.
With the downfall of the kingdom of Israel,
the tribe of Judah became the sole representa-
tive of the Hebrew nation (besides the Levites).
In Genesis (XLIX, 9) Judah was compared to a
lion and according to the Midrash, the emblem
of the tribe. of Judah was a lion. The symbol of
the lion represented strength, courage and vic-
tory to this triumphant tribe. Indeed, then., it
is not strange for the lion to be the most popular
decoration as it represents "Judaism" as cour-
ageous and loyal to the principles of religion
and perhaps even symbolizes the protective - fea-
tures of our faith in G-d,

The Problem of the 'Stateless'

A report of great significance in the effort to protest the
status of "stateless" Jews has just come from London,
through the Polish Telegraph Agency. It is revealed that the
Polish government is making representations to the Allied
governments to make certain that Polish Jews who were
liberated from German captivity and who refuse to return
to Poland are not deprived of their rights as Polish citizens.
The report indicates that while some Jews have agreed
to return to Poland, the majority preferred not to do so and
that about 3,000 liberated' Polish Jews have been warned
that they would be classified as "stateless" if they refused
to return to their former homes. Most of them have been
placed in a camp for "stateless" persons, but have been prom-
ised that they would not be deprived of their Polish citizen-
ship pending further decision.

At the same time, in London, John Parker, Laborite M.
P., stated that the Soviet government, faced with the prob-
lem of what to do with the 250,000 Jews from Poland who
had fled to Russia during the war, appears to favor their
settlement in Palestine. Mr. Parker has expressed the view
that the Soviet's endorsement of the Jewish National Home .
resolution adopted by the World Trade Union Congress held
in London recently was a result of its approval of a plan for
the settlement of the Polish Jews in Palestine.
The Polish government's statement seems to indicate
that there will be no obstacles in the way of settling the
"stateless" in Palestine—provided that the British govern-
ment can be induced to repeal the White Paper which would
destroy Jewish hopes and would repudiate the pledges to
the Jewish people by the entire civilized world.

Talmudic Tales

By DAVID MORANTZ

the Talmud and folklore of the Jewish people dating back
as far as 3,000 years).

SOUND BUSINESS ADVICE

A young man inherited a considerable amount
of wealth and, desiring to know the best way to
invest it, he went to a rabbi for his advice.
"If you would be wise," said the rabbi, "you
will invest a third of it in immovable property,
a third in business and the balance to have cash
at call."
"Try always to have payment for your goods
when they are delivered to you."
"Be content with a small profit on articles
which you can easily obtain and dispose of rather
than large profits on articles which must be
brought from a distance."
"If you plan to undertake anything in con-
junction with another, always do so with one
who is known to be a successful man,"
"And always remember," the rabbi went 'on,.
"you cannot expect success if yoUr business or
occupation is inimical to your neighbor."

President Truman has joined the supporters of the
FEPC bill by expressing the hope, at a press conference,
that the House Rules Committee will reconsider its refusal
to allow the House to vote on the measure.
The bill failed to reach the House when the committee
was tied by a six-to-six vote on the question. A petition
to force the issue would require 212 signatures of Congress-
men and more -than half of that number has already been
secured.

THE BIBLE

By MARIE SYRKIN
The Bible is a big, thick book
That seems so black and wise,
Quite like an aged gentleman
With stern and serious eyes.
But oh, inside are lovely tales
That hold the sweetest truth,
And some are sad like that of Job
And some are glad like Ruth.

THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK

. By E. E. LEVINGER
The sculptor dreams his dreams in stone,
The potter works in clay;
The scholar leaves us worlds alone,
When he has gone his way.
No marble gods the Hebrew wrought,
No tombs to pierce the stars;
Nor sculpture of Assyria, fraught
With scenes of mighty wars.
For yellow gold and nations fought,
And power which passed away;
The wealth of books our fathers sought—
And it is our today,
