The Houston Rabbinical Association has adopted a resolution condemning as "un- founded and an insult to the vast majority of American Jews," a statement by Rabbi Hyman J. Schachtel, of Congregation Beth Israel, as- serting that Zionists "would ghettoize" the Jewish people. Rabbi Schachtel, whose con- - gregation last year relegated Kashruth obser- vers and Zionists to second class membership, , was further rebuked by his colleagues, who stated that his "insinuation that only anti- Zionist are real American Jews, and that only they can be properly called proponents of 'American Judaism' is . a falsehood, deeply resented by American Israel." Although they have been liberated, the surviving Jews of Europe have no sense of freedom and no sense of security, and hun- dreds of thousands of them are yearning for settleMent in Palestine, as the one means of achieving a new life, according to Harry Greenstein, former deputy director of the Welfare Division of UNRRA. PALESTINE The adoption of an amended resolution by the Vaad Leumi, Jewish Palestine's Na- tional Council, on the public observance of the Sabbath, has cleared the way for the re- turn of Mizrachi and Hapoel Hamizrachi, to their posts on the Executive Committee of the Council. Senator Ferguson is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee which has the auth- ority to revive the measure kill- ed by the House Committee. The letter released by Alan N. Brown, administrative secretary of the Detroit Chap- ter of the Guild, says in part: 'Discrimination in employment is inimical to the proper func- tioning of our democratic proces- ses. Merit and ability should be the determining factor in em- ployment, not one's race, reli- gion or color". OVERSEAS Newspaper correspondents at the interroga- tion of Julius Streicher, Germany's number one Jew-baiter captured by a New York Jewish army officer, were strictly forbidden to ask questions on the persecution of Jews. The censors acted on orders from Supreme Allied Headquarters. Danish citizens who enriched themselves working for the Germans during the occupa- tion, were listed among those • who would re- ceive severe punishment under an amendment to Denmark's penal law, submitted to the Danish Parliament by Justice Minister Busch- Jensen. Declaring that American Jewry was "fight- ing its hardest for Palestine and we believe to have met with "success," Rabbi James G. Hell- er, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, conveyed the personal greetings of American Jewry to Jewish Palestine at a plen- ary session of Vaad Leumi, Jewish Palestine's National Council. He asserted that the fer- vent wish among American Jews, was for a Jewish state in Palestine, and upon this will, Zionism could depend in its most dif- ficult hours. Palestinian men and women serving with British armed forces will be demobilized by a system similar to the scheme for the release of United Kingdom military personnel, it was officially announced in a statement issued by the Allied authorities. A conference of central Jewish organiza- tions, such as the American Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Com- mittee, the Boards of Jewish Deputies of Bri- tain and South Africa, to discuss the estab- lishment of a suitable memorial in Palestine for Europe's Jewish martyrs, was decided on at a special meeting at the offices of the Vaad Leumi, Jewish Palestine's National Council. Sir Edward Spears was accused of meddling in the Levantine situation, by the Beirut news- paper Sawt Elahrar, which asked why he doesn't intervene "in behalf of the Arabs in Palestine and Transjordan?" Friday, June 15, 1945 Brigade Hoping For Occupation Role in Germany Disappointed Over Delay in Assignment; Now on • Frontier Control By NORMAN LOURIE TAR VISIO, Italy (JPS-Palcor) —Delay in assigning them to duties with the forces of occupa- tion in Germany proper has made the members of the Jew- ish Brigade restive, as they re- call that Winston Churchill, an- nouncing the Brigade's forma- tion in September, 1944, express- ed the hope that the Brigade would not only participate in frontline fighting, but also in the occupation of Germany. Within limits, the Brigade has participated in frontline fight- ing, bit it is yet to be assigned to duties with the occupying forces. It is generally recogniz- ed, however, that the question of occupation presents a distinct psychological problem, particu- larly for the many whose fam- ilies were persecuted or murder ed under the Nazi regime. Some gesture toward "appeas- ing" the Jewish Brigade is seen in their assignment, in the past few days, to frontier control and security functions on the Aus- tro-Italian and Yugoslav-Italian frontiers, with Tarvisio as head- quarters. Operating under the command of the Fifth Corps as part of the 78th Division, which. comprises predominantly. United Kingdom troops and one Ameri- can Mountain Regiment, the Jew- ish Brigade finds itself, for the first time, in direct control of German military personnel which includes over one thous- and occupants of the German military hospital at Tarvisio, mostly paratroopers. The Brigade's military police controls traffic on the main road from Tarvisio, Italy, to Klagen- furt, Austria. But the Brigade area is specifically on the Italian side of the frontier, although convoys of Palestinian transport companies and of the Brigade transport pass, daily, in and out of Austria.
