2,500 Yr. Old Secret of Galilean City
Unectirthed by Hebrew U. Expedition
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Build-
ings of an ancient city called
Beth Yerach, which was, ap-
parently, a prosperous market
town of Palestine about 2,500
years ago have been uncovered
on the southwestern shore of
the Sea of Galilee in northern
Palestine, it is reported in Da-
var.
An expedition led by Dr. Ben-
jamin Maisler and Dr. Moshe
Stekolis of the Hebrew Univer-
sity has been excavating on the
site since last winter, with funds
supplied by the Histadruth and
the Jewish National Fund.
Not far below the surface the
expedition found buildings dat-
ing from the Second Temple era,
between 2,000 and 2,500 years
ago. Particular interest was
aroused by two groups of build-
ings on either side of a road-
way ten meters broad compris-
ing part of a suburb of which
construction began during the
Ptolemaic period. One of these
houses had a paved inner court-
yard, living rooms, bath house,
kitchen and store rooms.
Beth Yerach was probably
one of the largest and most im-
portant market towns in north-
ern Palestine, serving as a cen-
ter for a progressive and dense-
ly populated agricultural and
trading era. Its architectural
and cultural development show-
ed influences of other countries,
judging by evidence from de-
bris 5,000 years old. For exam-
ple, the excavators uncovered
brick buildings, one of which
contained an aqueduct.
Palestine Organizes
Standards Institute
To Test Products
Manchester Guardian
Supports De Gaulle
The Standards Institution of
Palestine, new national stand-
ardizing association, was organ-
ized in Palestine in January of
this year. The Institution is a
joint undertaking of the Gov-
ernment, the Jewish Agency, the
Association of Engineers and
Architects, the Municipal Cor-
poration of Tel-Aviv, the Manu-
facturers' Association, and the
Industrial Council.
The Institution will publish
standard specifications of indus-
trial products and materials,
will test commodities which have
been made the subject of stand-
ard specifications,. and will issue
a standardization mark for test-
ed products. It also will test
commodities not standardized so
far and will promote research in
relation to standardization and
concerning properties of mater-
ials in general.
The Institution has taken over
the Laboratory for Testing Ma-
terials in Tel-Aviv in order to
carry out its testing program.
Officers are: C. Wilson Brown,
CBE, chairman of the War Sup-
ply Board, president; Dr. . E.
Schmorak, head of the Depart-
ment for Trade and Industry of
the Jewish Agency, vice-presi-
dent; A. Shenkar, president of
the Manufacturers' Association,
vice-president.
Arnold Arnstein, Ch. E., for
the past 20 years in charge of
the Laboratory for Testing Ma-
terials, is director.
The Institution also plans to
publish a journal in connection
with the Journal of the Assoc-
iation of Engineers and Archi-
tects.
LONDON, (Palcor)—The Man-
chester Guardian, Britain's lead-
ing liberal newspaper, announc-
ed its support of Gen. DeGaulle's
call for a review of the whole
Middle East problem, not the
Syrian-Lebanese problem alone.
Such a review must include
Palestine as well, says the news-
paper, warning that British ap-
peasement of the Arabs at the
expense of the Jews may back-
fire. The editorial accuses says
that the Arabs should be taught
to make concessions.
