More than '700 boys and girls
attending four of the Detroit
Jewish school systems participat-
ed in a colorful pageant marking
the first observance here of a
Hag Habikkurim, after the fash-
ion of the Palestinian harvest
festival, at the Shaarey Zedek
• last Sunday morning.
Children of the United Hebrew
Schools, Shaarey Zedek, Farband
and Sholem Aleichem Institute
participated in this event which
was the first in what is planned
to be a series of celebrations to
be conducted jointly by Detroit
Je Wish schools.
The offerings . given by the
children on this occasion, total-
ling nearly $600, were turned
over to the Jewish National Fund
for six Golden Book inscriptions
in memory of President Roose-
velt.
Pledges of Allegiance
Commencing with the presen-
tation of the -American and Jew-
ish- flags by members of Zionist
youth groups and the pledges of
allegiance, the festival was mark-
ed by mass singing, a solo by
Cantor J. H. Sonenklar and the
following three playlets:
"Naomi," a Hebrew playlet
written by Bernard Isaacs and
presented by Drora Selesny,

Rachel Rosenstein and Anne
Baschin. MiSs Selesny sang the
solo parts and the narrator who
explained the play in English was
Hannah Zelanka.
"Ruth," an operetta by Law-
rence Morton, was presented by
Shaarey Zedek pupils.
Present Yiddish Sketch
"Matan Torah," a Yiddish
'sketch, was given by the follow-
ing members of the graduating
class of the Farband Folkshule:
May Holtzman, Anita Eisner,
Anna Cohen, Mary Moerman,
Jack Weiner, Gerson Cooper, Es-
mond Brown, Joseph Meyerowitz,
Saul Rubin.
Simha Rubinstein, director of
the Shaarey Zedek school, was
chairinan of the gathering.
Shirley Subar led in commun-
ity singing. The Bikkurim cere-
mony during which fruits were
presented in baskets was carried
out by Shaarey Zedek pupils.
The gifts to the Jewish National
Fund were presented by a group
of children in behalf of all the
participating schools.
The festival concluded with the
singing of Hebrew songs and the
dancing of the Hora by members
of Habonim, labor Zionist youth,
and members of other Zionist
youth groups, under the -leader-
ship of Leon Gura.

`Palestine Speaks' Jewish Schools'
Drama on CKLW Concert Sunday

Event at Durfee Auditorium

"Palestine Speaks", weekly
radio program which tells the
story of Palestine to the Ameri-
can people, may be heard in
Detroit and vicinity every Sat-
urday night at 10 o'clock, over
station CKLW.
Stars of stage, screen and ra-
dio are heard in these radio pro-
grams which tell the story of
the building of the Jewish home-
land and of the work of the
Zionist Organization of America.
Announcing this program, Rab-
bi Leon Fram, president of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit,
has issued the following state- -
ment:
"We owe it to the Zionist Or-
ganization of Windsor, and es-
pecially to its leader, Harry
Rosenthal, that the- pebple of
Detroit can now hear thege ra-
dio dramas.
"I urge every Zionist in De-
troit to call this program to the
attention of his friends and
'neighbors. Zionists should avail
themselves of this regular Sat-
urday night opportunity to win
membership for Zionism.
"I urge every Jew to invite
non-Jews to listen. , The story
of Jewish achievement in Pales-
tine will create more goodwill
between Jew and non-Jew than
any other public relations ef-
fort."

Bnai Brith Initiates
1,000 New Members
At Center Wednesday

More than 1,000 new members
of Bnai Brith" will be initiated
at a city-wide ceremony under
the auspices of the Greater De-
troit Bnai Brith Council, next
Wednesday at 8:30 p. m., in the
main auditorium of the Jewish
Community Center.
The committee headed by. Sam
Maza announces that the pro-
grani will feature a talk by
Archie H. Cohen, former presi-
dent of District Grand Lodge
Number 6; head of the District
Americanism Committee.
The . program, which is open to
the public, will include the tra-
ditional ritual of initiation by
the degree team of Pisgah Lodge,
with Cantor J. H: Sonenklar,
lending musical accompaniment.
During the current year, Bnai
Brith, which now numbers six
men's lodges and seven women's
groups in Detroit, added more
than 2,000 members to its roster.

To Be Marked by Perefz

Fete, and Graduation

A combined concert and public
meeting, arranged by the Council
of Jewish Schools and the United
High School, will take place
next Sunday evening, at 8:30, at
the Durfee School • Auditorium,
LaSalle and Collingwood.
Graduation of Mittelshule stu-
dents (the United High School)
and a celebration on the occasion
of the birthday anniversary of
the _late J. L. Peretz, the great
Yiddish author, will mark this
event.
Daniel Frohman is in charge
of the musical portion of the
program and M. Haar is directing
the dramatic portion of the
evening.

Arbeiter Ring, Farband, Sholem
Aleicheni school branches and at
the office of the Council of
Jewish Schools and the United

Marguerite Kozenn, soprano,
did a commendale job in . the
title' role of the fairy tale opera
"Rusalka," staged's - last Sunday
evening at the Scottish Rite
Cathedral.
The enchanting music by An-
ton Dvorak gave. Miss Kozenn
an opportunity to show the fine
quality of her voice.
Rose Delmar, contralto; as the
witch, was among the favorites
of the audience. Others who
distinguished themselves were
Avery Crew, Cyril Wezemael,
Harriet Toomey, Tracy Sylves-
ter and June Gardner.
Of particular interest to the
Jewish community is the parti-
cipation in the opera, as first
and second forest nymphs, of
Wyn Garden and. Leah Crohn.
Drora Selesny, Rosalie Gross,
Frances Bloom, • Beverly Ham-
burger were among the singing
nymphs.
Herman' Adler, conductor of
the opera, received ovations.
. This interesting opera, the
story for which was written by
Jaroslav Kvapil, the English
translation being by Ruth and
Thomas Martin, attracted na-
tionwide attention. Julius Cha-
jes, artistic director of the De-
troit Friends _ of Opera, Inc.,
_which sponsored the presenta-
tion, received a letter from
Jan Masaryk warmly commend-
ing the Detroit group for giving
