80,000 Jews Rescued
From Nazi Camps by
Soviets, Official Says

MOSCOW, (JTA)—About 80,-
000 Jews have been liberated by
the Red Army from different
concentration camps in Germany
and German-held - countries, it
was reported here from Warsaw.
A larke number of them are
Polish Jews, the report said.
The Central Committee of
Polish Jews in Lublin dispatched
a number of its members to
meet the returning Jews. As-
sisted by Polish authorities, the
committee organized receiving
stations to which the liberated
Jews are delivered by the Red
Army.
Dr. S. Sfard, representative of
the Association of Polish Jews
in the USSR, told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that in-
creased aid from American Jew-
ry is needed.
"Up to today," Dr. Sfard
stated, "we have received four
transpOrts of clothing and medi-
caments from the Joint Distri-
bution Committee and other re-
lief groups."
Dr. Sfard regretted the fact
that the Jews of Poland are not
as yet in a position to send a
delegation to the U. S. to report
their situation. He estimated
that there are, at present, 50,000
Jews in Poland.
The majority of the repatriated
Polish Jews, Dr. Sfard stated,
have no relatives left alive in
Poland. They believe that the
Polish Government in Warsaw
will provide them with passports'
to enable, their emigration to the
U. S., Palestine and othei coun-
tries where they have friends
willing to aid them.

Reviewing the Jewish position

mates that of the total Jewish

sult of the Nazi program of ex-

12 years of mass persecution.
Political Action Cited
In dealing with the problem
of the displaced :and upr6oted
Jews who have survived the Hit-
ler era, the author stresses the
fact that the world is • now be-

vereign states, and that the es-
tablishment of strong national
structures 'in the post-war world
will doom to failure any attempt
to solve the Jewish problem ex-

100,000 Dutch Jews
Believed Massacred
During Occupation

UTRECHT, Holland (JTA) —
About 25,000 Jews remain in
Holland, according to the best
information available here. Of
these, about 9,000 were spared
because they were 'married to
noniJews, while the others went
into hiding. This means that
about 100,000 Jews were exter-
minated.
The apparent contradiction be-
iween the large loss of life and
the almost unanimous testimony
concerning the assistance given
Jews by the non-Jewish popula-
tion, can be explained by the
fact that the Germans succeeded
in luring many Jews to their
death by the creation of a "Jew-
ish Council," the members of
which, the Nazis promised, would
not be deported.
The council, at first, was en-
trusted with organizing Jewish
life, including schools, theaters,
hospitals and similar institutions.
Soon, the organization was ob-
liged to handle the deportation
'of thousands of Jews. At one
time, 17,000 Jews were on the
staff of the council, hoping that
they would thus evade deporta-
tion. Eventually, however, when
it was no longer useful to them,
the Nazis disbanded the council
and deported its membership. •
