JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The greatest demonstration in
the history of modern Palestine took place here as the Jew-
ish population went wild at news of the victory in. Europe.
The streets and synagogues were constantly filled with
happy celebrators and United Nations and Jewish flags
flew from hundreds of buildings.
Work in all but essential in-;
dustries stopped in 'accordance
with a V-E Day proclamation by
the Jewish National Council. Be-
tween 4 and 7 p. m. all urban
traffic came to a halt, and pub-
lic prayers ,:were said in all Syna-
gogues.
Schools were open, but regular
classes were suspended while
teachers explained to their pu-
pils the significance of the oc-
casion. Lighted Mogen Davids
and menorahs shone forth from
the roofs of the higher struc-
tures.
Special victory editions of the
Hebrew papers reviewed the
Jewish role in the war effort,
stressing that at least 1,300,006
Jews fought in the armies of the
United Nations, while 4,000,000
Jews were murdered.
The Jewish Agency for Pales-
tine issued a manifesto in which
it pointed out that the war cost
the destruction of one-third - of
world Jewry aTd three-quarters
of the Jews in the formerly Nazi-
occupied. portion of Europe.
