At Homes for Confirmancis
of Temple Beth El
in their new book just' publish-
ed "Jews in the PostWar World"
(Dryden Press) that "some 4,-
000,000 Jews have been exter-
minated in the course of the
present war."
Dr. Gottschalk, director of the
Research Institute on Peace and
Postwar Problems of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee, and
Sgt. Duker, formerly a member
of the Institute, state that the
`Jewish population of the world
"has been reduced from 16,171,-
000 in 1938 to a little more than
12,000,000. This constitutes a far
greater .percentage of loss than
has been sustained by any other
people in modern times."
Breaking down Jewish decima-
tion country by country, Gotts-
chalk and Duker say:
`Polish Jewry has been re-
duced by one half, Belgian Jewry
by three quarters, Greek Jewry
by five sixths. According to the
most hopeful of reasonable pre-
dictions, there will be some 2,-
000,000 Jews in Europe --(outside
the Soviet Union) instead of the
6,000,000 previously there. Aside
from some.3,000,000.Jews in Rush
•sia, 2,000 ; 000 more will - be dis-
tributed among Palestine,. Latin
Arnerica,.. Africa, Asia and- Aus-
tralia.
•
"The ° largest proportion of
Jews, more than 6,000.000", the
authors point out, "will reside
in countries where English is
either widely or universally
spoken: 4,700,000 in the U. S.;
535,000 in - Palestine; 370,000 in
Great. Britain; _115,000 in Canada;
100,000 in.South Africa and about
30,000 in Australia and -New Zea-
land. The second largest group
of Jews will be living ih regions
where Russian is the dominant
language. Gentian, until 1933
the second cultural language of
the Jews of Central Europe and
of the westernized Jews in the
East, will lose in importance."
