Congregational Activities Temple Israel Holds V-E Day Service Friday Shaarey Zedek Beth Yehudah To Plan Program Plans Program At Public Meeting For Shevuoth Board of Education Official to Address Gathering at Yeshivah This Sunday Parents of students attending the various departments of Yesh- ivath Beth Yehudah this Sunday at 10:30 a. m., will gather at a special meeting in the school building, on Dexter and Cort- land, to discuss the program of instruction f or the summer months and the fall semester. This will be the third monthly gathering of the group organized as "Friends of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah." Dr. H. L. Harrington, assistant superintendent of the Detroit Board of Education, in charge of Intermediate schools, will speak on the relation between the Yeshivah and the local public schools in conformity with the arrangement made affecting the program of Yeshivah students at- tending city schools from the 7th through the 12th grades. All members.of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah will participate in the yearly meeting of the school Monday, May 21, at 8 p. m. and elect members of the board of directors for the ensuing year. The principal address will be delivered by Chaim Lieberman, editorial writer of the New York Jewish Daily Forward. The annual meeting will round out 28 years of the Yeshivah's ex- istence. The institution was found- ed by the late Rabbi Yehudah Leib Levin on Lag B'Omer of the Hebrew calendar year 5677. With over 500 students new in attendance at the Yeshivah after- noon classes, the Beth Jacob School for Girls, and the Beth Yehudah Day School, the He- brew Talmudical Academy has become the second largest com- munal Jewish educational sys- tem. Rabbi Sperka to Give Shevuoth Message on WWJ Next Thursday Rabbi Joshua Sperka of Con- gregation Bnai David will de- liver a Sevuoth message over Station WWJ on Thursday, May 17, at 9:15 a. m. He has chosen the appropriate theme for the festival—"The Laws of Sinai for Human Conduct and Permanent Peace." Rabbi Sperka has been con- ducting the Jewish Radio Pulpit over WWJ for several years, in- terpreting to the community at large Jewish values, the Holy Days and the principles of the Jewish Religion. Originally when the Jewish Radio Pulpit was established on Station WWJ Rab- bi Sperka was invited to "direct and to bring the .meaning of the Jewish Religion and Jewish festivals to the Jewish commun- ity and to the community at large." Rabbi Sperka's broadcasts have received favorable comment as seen by the letter that' come into Station WWJ. Halevy Singing Society Plans Get-Together The new president of the Halevy Singing Society, Dave Goldberg, announces that the following members have been added to standing committees: membership, Minnie Lakoritz, Esther Levy and Harry Resnick; publicity, Gertrude Levine. Plans have been made for a "Meet the Halevy" evening. Temple Beth El Plans Shevuoth Services, May 18 High School Dept. Holds Commencement Program This Friday Night Shevuoth Services at Temple Beth El will be held on Friday morning, May 18, at 10:30. Dr. B. Benedict Glazer will preach and the Temple Quartet will render the musical program. The annual Consecration serv- ices for Confirmands and their parents will be held on Friday evening, May 18, at 8:15. Dr. B. Benedict Glazer will preach. The musical program will be given by the Temple Quartet with Julius Chajes directing and Jason Tickton at the organ. A social hour will follow the serv- ices. Confirmation exercises will be held Sunday morning, May 20, at 9:30. A class of 64 will be con- firmed by Dr. Glazer. Temple Israel will observe the national V-E Day of Prayer pro- claimed by President Truman, at its Sabbath Eve Services this Friday night in the Lecture Hall of the Detroit Institute of Ants at 8:30. Rabbi Leon Fram will' lead the congregation in a prayer composed for the occasion. Beginning Friday evening, May 18, the Sabbath Eve serv- ices will be held in the congrega- tional meeting room, at No. 14 Boulevard Building, lobby floor, 3076 East Grand Boulevard. The half-hour services will begin at 8:30 p. m. Rabbi Fram will deliver brief sermons at each of the services, and Cantor Robert S. Tulman and Karl W. Haas, or- ganist, will provide the musical background of the Sabbath tra- dition. On Friday evening, May 18, Rabbi Fram will preach on the subject, "Back To Sinai." "The Jew at San Francisco" will be 'the subject of Rabbi Leon Fram's lecture at the Sab- bath Eve Services of Temple Israel this Friday evening, May 11, at 8:30, in the Lecture Hall of the Detroit Institute of Arts. 2 Million Quota In Shaarey - Zedek War Bond Drive A $2,000.000 quota for the Seventh War Loan has been set by Congregation Shaarey Zedek. A committee of 28, headed by Dr. Morris M. Burstein, is con- ducting the drive with the coop- eration with the Men's Club, the Sisterhood and other groups. Bonds will be sold at the Con- gregation office every weekday and evening with the exception of Friday evening and on Sun- day morning. Bonds also will be sold after t h e special n Victory Service on Sunday morning. Approximately $1,240,000 worth of bonds were sold through the Congregation during the Sixth War Loan and the same amount during the Fifth Bond drive. Plan V-E Day Services In Synagogues, Temples IN accordance with the proclamation issued by President Truman, many synagogues and tem- ples will hold V-E Day services over the week-end. Michigan Synagogue Conference To Plan Bond Drive Here Monday The Michigan Synagogue Con- ference in conjunction with the U. S. Treasury Department has arranged for a meeting of syna- gogue representatives on Mon- day, May 14, at 9 p. m. in the Congregation Bnai David to plan 'a tribute to the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At the meeting the synagogue Conference will plan its drive in the 7th War Loan.
