Exhibit Honors Heroes
of Ghetto Uprising
NEW YORK—On the occasion
of the second_ anniversary of
April 19, in 1948, when the en-
slaved. JeWs of the Warsaw
ghetto had launched a most
heroic revolt against their Nazi
tormentors, the Jewish Labor
Committee is organizing a pic-
torial exhibition which will be
opened on April 19' at- the Van-
derbilt Gallery, 215 West 57th.
5,000 Non-Aryans
Remain in Reich,
Says State Dept.

are left in Germany, "after taking
account of- deaths ,and . dispersals,
according to a State Department
survey of displaced populations
in Europe.
Some.. of the "non-Aryans,"
says the 'report, have been kept
at work in factories and on-forti-

J eivish Youth's
Two talented Detroit young-
sters, Betty Kowalsky, 16, and
Kurt Saffir, 15, will be present-
ed in piano recitals at the Jewish
Center, .April 15 and 22, respec-
tively, it was announced by
Julius Chajes, Center music di-
rector.
Miss Kowalsky's program, this
Sunday at 3 p. xn., will include
Bach's. Toccata, _and Fugue in : D
Minor; Schumann's Sonata in G
Minor; .Chajes' Palestinian Melo-
dies; ,Braham's Capricco. in B
Minor; Chopin's Ballads in A
Flat Major, and Two Etudes;
Grenados' 0 La Maja, and GerSh-
Nvin's Three Prehides.
Young Saffir, born in Vienna,
has been in the U. S. since he was
9. He made his piano debut at
the age of 6 in Vienna, and for
the past five- years has been-
studying with Mr. Chajes at the
Center on a scholarship granted
by the Music Study Club and the
Jewish Center.
There is no admission for both
concerts and -the public is in-
vited to attend.

WILLIAM • BARNETT, 69, of
18244 Oak Drive, head of the
Windsor Hebrew schools until he
came to Detroit in 1938, died
April 5. Funeral services were
held at Kaufman Funeral Home
Sunday. Burial was in Clover
Hill Park Cemetery. Surviving
are his wife, Lottie; two sons, Dr.
Louis and Dr. Morton; four dau-
ghters, Mrs. Dena Connery, Mrs.
Nathan Elkus, Mrs. Jesse Shi-
kowsky and Mrs. Dorothy Gold-
smith, the latter two of Los
Angeles; 11 grandchildren. •

NEW YQRK—The National
Jewish Welfare Board has been
cited for the outstanding war
service program carried on by
its 293 affiliated Jewish Centers
and YM-YWHAs, it was revealed
by Frank L. Weil, president of
the JWB.
When the Columbia Broadcast-
ing System featured -on its re-
cent "Youth on Parade" program
a salute to Jewish- Centers who
have participated in war bond
drives, = a special citation was
made to a Jewish. Center- affiliat-
ed with JWB for conducting an
outstanding • bond sale, Mr. Weil
disclosed. . -
The award was presented by
Dolphe - Mantin, director of
"Youth on Parade."
"Youth. on Parade," which de-.
votes part of its program to dra-
matizing some outstanding war
service activity which young
People have performed, paid
tribute to the YM-YWHA of
Paterson, N. J., a member agenCy
of the National JWB, for its no-
table record in' the sale of war
stamps and bonds.
In the-1943-44 campaign, $400,
000 worth of war starrips and
bonds *as sold. Mdre than
$721,000' in •stamps • and :bon&
was collected in the 1944-45
drive, which reached a total of.
4,400 individual customers, Mr.
Weil reported.
Chairman of these bond cam-
paigns was Arnulf Pins, 18, who
came to the U. S. from Germany
six years ago. The young retu-
gee, who •iS now in the' armed
services, as president of the 'High
School' Club Council of the' Pat-
erson YM-YWHA,. was instru-
mental in.-persuading other youth
groups to participate in the bond
driyes.
On Saturday, May 26, "Youth
on Parade" will again - cite• an
outstanding war service rendered
by a YM-YWHA or a Jewish
Center affiliated with the Na-
tional JWB.
