Joint Appeal Issued for More Volunteers From Palestine;
Statement Declares Jewish Brigade Represents
World Jewry at the Front
Special By Wire to The Jewish News
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The Jewish Agency for Palestine and the
Vaad Leumi on Tuesday issued a joint appeal for more volunteert
for the Jewish Brigade, in a statement hailing the announcement of
the Brigadet going into action in Italy.
The statement said that the volunteers in the Brigade "will
break down the last barrier remaining between Jews in the demo-
cratic countries and the remnants of martyred European Jewry."
Pointing out that hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers have
been fighting anonimously in the ranks of all the Allied forces while
30,000 Palestinian Jews have been fighting with the British 8th
Army equally unrecognized, the statement said: "Today for the
first time in this war the world officially was informed that the
Jewish fighting force organized as a national unit has entered the
fighting line bearing the name of the Jewish people and carrying
the Flag of Zion."
The statement declared that Jews throughout the world are
heart and soul with the Brigade, adding that "men of the Jewish
Brigade are representatives of the Jewish people at the front. Their
services involve an obligation to join them in the great struggle
against the hangmen of our people."

WITH THE JEWISH BRIGADE, ITALY—In a copyrighted
article by the Overseas News Agency it was revealed that the Jewish
Brigade, in training in the Middle East for over six months, has
been in action 'with the British 8th Army and giving a brilliant ac-
count of themselves.
While there are more than 1,500,000 Jews in the uniforms of the
Allied forces-500,000 with the U. S. forces—this is the first time
that an all-Jewish unit, carrying their own flag—the Star of David
—has been in action.
A few British high ranking officers are in command, headed by
Brig. Gen. Ernest F. Benjamin, a veteran British soldier noted for
his ability at training special combat troops. Antong his most not-
able accomplishment was the training of American soldiers for the
invasion of France.
Some of the men in Gen. Benjamin's Brigade are men who have
escaped from concentration camps and half of them have personal
scores to settle with the Nazis for the extermination of relatives.
All of the vehicles used by the Brigade bear the Star of David
insignia. Some of the troops and material which formed the nucleus
of the Brigade are veterans of the North African campaign. Some
served with the American 5th Army and British 8th Army since the
Italian campaign.
. Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, commander of Allied ground forces,
praised the all-Jewish group.

• NEW YORK—The ideals for which the present world conflict To Hear Name Bands
is being fought will not be attained unless those responsible for
1
crimes against humanity in the last decade are brought to justice,
representatives of the American Jewish Coriference . declared at a
hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington.
Maurice Bisgyer, member of the Conference's Interim Com-
mittee; Sol Gelb, chief assistant district attorney, New York County,
arid Dr. Alexander S. Kohanski, the Conference's director of re-
search, speaking for the American Jewish Conference and its
affiliated organizations, testified in favor of Rep. Emanuel Celler's
resolution requesting President Roosevelt to appoint a commission
to work with the United Nations War Crimes Commission in prepa-
ration of plans for the punishment of war criminals.
4 Million Jews Exterminated by Nazis
"Between four and five million Jews were exterminated by
the Nazis," the Conference representatives said, and "we believe
that those who are responsible, •directly and indirectly, must be
punished. The military. defeat of the Axis will not of itself purify
Europe. There is evidence in the liberated and ex-energy countries
that anti-Semitism persists. It can only be uprooted if Hitler and
all the Axis leaders and collaborators are made examples of for
future history."
Expressing concern . over the reports of disagreement on pro-
cedure in the punishment of Nazi leaders for crimes they had
committed and are still committing in their own territories. the
Conference representatives said, "The lives of nearly 500,000 re-
maining Jews in Axis territory are endangered by the intimation
that their persecutors may escape punishment."
The Conference was organized in' 1943 as a body representa:
tive of American Jewry to consider and recommend action on
problems relating to the rights and status of Jews in the postwar
world, and to further Jewish rights to Palestine. Its delegates
come from the 60 largest national Jewish membership organiza-
tions and from communities throughout the country.
Specify Crimes Against Jews in Indictment
The Conference representatives proposed the following rec-
ommendations:
"Crimes committed by the Axis nations and their associates
against the Jewish people shall be duly specified in the indictment
against the war criminals and made punishable in accordance with
the policy announced by the United Nations.
"The United Nations shall require the surrender a the
criminals. Provision for surrender shall be included in the terms
of armistice.
"The national as well as international courts shall reeognize
Jewish representatives as amici curiae.
"The Commission, for Investigation of War Crimes, or a simi-
lar authority, shall give locus standi to a representation of the
Jewish people." .
