Passover, 5705

Israel Zangwill once declared that—
"Since the Exodus freedom has always
spoken with a Hebrew accent."
As we review the world's experiences
during the past decade, this description of
Passover assumes new reality.
The foundations for liberty and justice
for mankind are to be found in the Passover
story.
First to seek national freedom, under
the leadership of Moses, the greatest Prophet
and Teacher the world has known, the
early Jews had set a precedent for stubborn
insistence that "liberty shall not perish from
the earth."
The Passover of the year 5705 places
new emphasis upon this interpretation. First
and longest to suffer at the hands of the
modern Pharaohs, Jews today represent the
symbol of the ancient Hebraic accent upon
liberty and justice.

The Moyne 'Killers'

Eliahu Hakim and Eliahu Ben Tsouri
were hanged for the slaying of Lord Moyne,
and it is to be hoped that this will end the
sad incidents which created a stir that for
a time had threatened the security of the
Jewish community in Palestine.
Outstanding Christians and Jews had
appealed for clemency for these two young-
sters who were looked upon as "misguided
idealists," as a New York Times correspond-
endt described them.
Lord Moyne's assassination forced an end
to terrorism in Palestine, as a result of Zion-
ist efforts. Let there also be -an end to an-
tagonism to Jewish aspirations in Palestine
on the part of Lord Moyne's friends.

The song of Solomon was incorporated in the
earliest Jewish Scriptures. Selections were sung
at certain festivals in the temple at Jerusalem
prior to its destruction by Titus. It was first de-
clared canonical by the Synod of Jarnnia 90 A. D.

Our struggle for equality and for just
rights is far-from over. The repatriation of
our dispossessed kinsmen, the imperative
need for the establishment of the Jewish
National Home in Palestine, the necessity
for large-scale relief efforts—these are chal-
lenges that are as serious for the world at
large as they are for our own people.
And as these challenges are being con-
stantly hurled at us, they demand that Jews
should take the lead in emphasizing the
Hebraic accent of freedom, that we never
should compromise in demands for justice,
that we always should be aware of the truth
of the basic principle that if one .compro-
mises with justice for himself he also com-
promises for all mankind.
We pray that the Passover of 5705 should
mark the beginning of permanent peace and
freedom for all mankind, since our people
can be free only in a totally free world.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

"The cost," says the Talmud, "often spoils the
relish."
"Many - things lawful are not expedient."
"He who teaches often learns himself."
"To be patient is sometimes better than to have
much wealth."
"The horse fed too liberally with oats becomes
unruly."
"First learn and then teach."
"Few are they who see their own faults."

were sent to the war prisoners' camp, although they both
have relatives in England and are in the. civilian category.
Warning that Nazi bullying of the youths may lead to
a fatal incident, the writer appeals for their immediate re-

would know better than to put Jews of any nationality in
the same camp with Germans." •
A Tennyson has, indeed, "come to judgMent." We are con-

persist in demanding fair dealing for all who suffer in-
dignities arising from Nazism.

The Stifled Jewish Voice

Berl Locker, member of the Executive of the Jew-
ish Agency and a leader in the Palestine Histadruth, in
his . address before the World Trade Union Conference in
London recently, in which he pointed to Palestine as the
only hope of the Jewish people, made this striking state-
ment:
•
"The Jews are the only people to whom the right to
freedom from fear is being denied." •
Was he justified in making this disturbing remark?
Perhaps it will be easier to judge Ms. -attitude on the
basis of the following declaration he made4o the conference
of the - world's labor leaders: .
"The pre-war world was divided into countries which
were driving out the Jews and countries refusing them ad-
mission. The -present, division is: the Axis •countries on the
one hand, which are murdering the JeWs,: .and the United
Nations on the other, doing extremely. little to help them."
This statement being, unfortunately, undeniable, it is
easy to recognize the reasoning in the contention that our
people are being denied the right to freedOm from fear. The
lethargy of the democratic powers is in ;itSelf frightening,
and it is discouraging to know that there not only are few
prospects of open door policies for Jewish ,settlers outside of
Palestine, but we are also -being denied a hearing at the
San Francisco United Nations' conference..
. The misery of hundreds of thousands • of Jews who can
be rescued cries out for a hearing. Will. our voice be heard?

On Passover the skies . of spring -
Are broad and blue and mellow;
To all that breathes new grace they bring
• The joyous feast to hallow.
•
The shackles that have bound the earth
Are smote , and burst asunder,
And all the world receives new birth,
Eternal round and wonder!

On Passover we tell - again
The old and thrilling .story, .
Of slaves who broke the tyrant's chain,
And marched to God and glory;
They sang a song of freedom then,
Together we repeat it,
It lifts the hearts and sou/s of men
Who hear and rise to greet it!

A song of freedom, sacred feast,
Art thou through all the ages,
That like the dawn that gilds the East,
New life and hopes presages.
For freedom - is a command divine,
And tyrants all shall perish;
We pledge in brimming cups of wine
Our faith to hold and cherish.

PESACH GAME

"NUT GOLF"
A Passover . game suitable for seniors is "Nut
Golf." The player is required to fillip the
nut along a definite course consisting of
circles, corresponding .• to holes in golf. These
circles are named after elements 'included in the
Seder. The diameter of the circles or "holeS"
will vary with the distances between "holes."
The starting point or "Tee" is called "Seder." The
one . who succeeds in completing the course in the
least nuMber of fillip's or. "strokes" is declared the
winner. The game is capable of several variations
and may be played indoors or outdoors. In de-
veloping the Nut Golf Game further, introduce
obstacles (hazards). In determining upon the
latter, try to choose names that suggest historical
events which transpired after Israel's exodus
Egypt, such as the Red Sea, Amalek, Baaleno,

Og, etc.
