THE

A Key as Symbol

Dr. Liebman Demands Jews
Control Zion immigration

Addresses Annual J. N. F. Auxiliary Event Which Netted
$45,000 Sum for Land-Redemption in Palestine, to
Establish Detroit Nachlah

An ordinary door key was
used as a symbol to explain the
need for a Jewish - Common-
wealth in Palestine, with Jewish
rights over control of immigra-
tion, in the inspiring address de-
livered on March 21, at the
Masonic Auditorium, by Dr.
Joshua Liebman of Boston, at
the 14th annual donor event of
the Ladies' Auxiliary of the
Jewish National Fund.
Taking the key from his pocket,
Dr. Liebman pointed out to the
audience of nearly 2,500 that its
significance lay in the fact that
he could enter his own home, by
opening its door with his own
key, at any time that he chose.
Must Control Immigration
"If that key were in some one
else's hand," he emphasized, "I
would be a stranger in my own
home."
This analogy, he declares, ap-
plies with great force to Pales-
tine, and if Jews are to rebuild
the land to its fullest capacity
they must have the right to con-
trol immigration.
Dr. Liebman outlined Jewish
achievements, told how Jews-had
contributed towards the war tri-
umphs of the United Nations and
expressed the hope that Chris-
tians will be cooperative in as-
suring adherence to pledgesmade

Political Crossfire
Traps Greek Jewry

CAIRO (JPS)—The surviving
Jews of Greece have been caught
in the . political cross-fire between
the two factions now warring for
power in Greece, and are being
accused of partisanship by both
sides; according to information
received by your correspondent.
Leading personalities of the
ELAS camp have accused the
Jews of favoring the British,
while the EDES consider the
Jews "leftists" a n d "sworn
ELAS men."
Jewish leaders in Greece trace
this perilous distrust to German
influence which has even pene-
trated partisan ranks- and is
noticeable in the relationship of
partisans of both factions toward
their Jewish comrades. The Ger-
man radio gloated some time ago
over anti-Semitism within parti-
san ranks, but your correspond-
ent discounted it at the time and
described it as "an enemy libel."
However, information received
since from Greek Jewish person-
alities, has confirmed this report
of anti-Semitism.

Government May Ban
Organizations Fighting
Restoration of Property

PARIS, (JTA)—The French
Government is considering a mo-
tion introduced in the Consulta-
tive Assembly by representatives
of the Front Nationale for the
dissolution of two organizations
established to protect the inter-
ests of purchasers of Jewish
property confiscated under the
Vichy anti-Jewish laws and ad-
ministrators of Jewish enter-
prises named by the Vichy re-
gime.
The motion was sponsored in
the assembly by Juliot Curie,
Father Phillipe and others. It
charges the two organizations
with conducting violent anti-
Jewish agitation. The decision of
the French Government may be
communicated to the Assembly
in the course of its present ses-
sion which closes tomorrow.
Though . the Commissariat for
Jewish Affairs which was estab-
lished by the Vichy regime has
ceased all activity under the
present regime, and did not op-
erate for at least four of the 12
months of this year, its 55,000,000
franc budget for 1944, allocated
by the Vichy Government, was
reduced by only 3,300,000 francs
in the revision of the national
budget by the Provisional Gov-
ernment, a study of the revision
ordinance discloses.

PARIS (JTA)—The Belgian
Government has given assurance
that all Jews who had a right to
residence in Belgium prior to
1939 will be readmitted regard-
less of their nationality, it was
revealed here by Dr. Joseph
Schwartz, European director of
the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, who has just returned from
a tour of the Low Countries
where he studied the Jewish sit-
uation and conferred with Belg-
ian. and Allied military authori-
ties.
At least 110,000 Jews were de-
ported from Holland to Germany .
and Poland, and 26,000 were de-
ported from Belgium during the
four years of German occupa-

tion, Dr. Schwartz was told.
Only about 10 to 15 thousand
Jews survive in Holland out of
a pre-war total of 140,000, he
said. Most of these are in terri-
tory still held by the Nazis.
About 20,000 Jews are in
Belgium, which had a pre-war
Jewish population of about 90,-
000. Half of these fled to France
at the time of the German in-
vasion in May, 1940.
Of the Jews presently in Belg-
ium about 7,000 are dependent
on relief, Dr. Schwartz said.
By arrangement with the Belg-
ian Government and the SHAEF
mission, Laura Margolis, a JDC
overseas worker, will be station-
ed in Brussels as director of JDC
activities in Belgium and Hol-
land. She will work in close con-
tact with the Belgian Jewish Re-
lief Organization which has been
reorganized under the chairman-
ship of Alfred Goldschmidt,
prominent industrialist and phil-
