Dr. Cyrus Adler:
Man to Remember

By Prof. Louis Finkelstein

President, Jewish Theological
Seminary of America

The fifth anniversary of the
death of Cyrus Adler finds the
Jewish people bereaved as never
before—mourning the loss of no
less than —
one - fourth
their n U in-
ber in t h e
d readful%
miseries of a
h u n dred
Lublins; the
e s traction
of hundreds
of sanctuar-
ies all over
Europe; the Mr. Adler
loss of the great centers of re-
ligious inspiration; and above all,
the aspirations for a bet ter
world in our day which for a
generation had filled our hearts.
The five years since Dr. Ad-
ler's death have not produced a
leader capable of serving us as
he did.

Born in Arkansas

Born in Arkansas, far from
centers of Jewish le a r n i n g,
reared in America when its
Jewish population was tiny, he
remained a devout, observant
Jew.
Few. if any, even in his own
generation. understood him. He
obviously belonged to the Hasi-
dim of the Jewish tradition, in
whom the utmost devotion to
God expresses itself not in sep-
aration from the world, but in
immersion in- its affairs, remain-
ing at the same time uncontami-
nated by its standards and pas-
sions.
Unfortunately, Cyrus A d l e r
could not help his friends to
understand him. I cannot re-
member a man so completely
unaware of his gifts.

Leadership Known

•

The founding of the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Com-
mittee could no _ t be kept a se-
cret nor could Dr. Adler's asso-
ciation with it. The leadership ,
of Dropsie College was neces-
sarily a public position. The
American Jewish Committee and
the Jewish Agency for Palestine
were achievements of historical
importance, and Dr. Adler's part
in them inevitably b e c a m e
known.
His great work at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America
was impossible to ignore.
He was called a statesman and
a diplomat, and he was indeed
both — but not in the ordinary
sense of covering offensive ideas
with courtly language. He was
a statesman and diplomat not in
form, but in substance.

French Jews Hit
Citizenship Curb

PARIS (JPS)—French Jewry
is disturbed by reported ob-
stacles met by Jews seeking
naturalization. These obstacles
are blamed on the French Min-
istry of Justice.
Applicants are asked to submit
evidence of service in the French
army or with Maqui units, and
are queried as to whether they
are married to French women,
and if their children were ed-
ucated in the "French spirit."
It is charged that 75 per cent
of all applications have been re-
jected without explanation.
Jewish organizations submit-
ted a memorandum to the Minis-
try of Propaganda, demanding
that it refute the contents of a
libelous booklet, given wide
clandestine circulation, which
contains a fictitious list of 260=
names of Jews alleged to have
denounced thousands of patriots
to the Gestapo.
The French Ministry of Pro-
paganda is reported to have re-
plied that it will abstain from
action until a probe ascertains
the authors and origin of the
booklet and the ,allegations
tamed therein.

And remember that these fighting men look to us for the

planes to fly, for the guns to shoot, the bombs . . . and

for the ships to take them to where the baffle is . . . and

to bring them back home again.
