Katz, executive secretary of the Tem- ple and editor of the Bulletin. Mr. Katz writes: "On Jan. 1, 1851, the congre- gation acquired by purchase from Thomas Hawley and wife, one-half acre of land in Ham- tramck Township, to be used as a cemetery. The purchase price was $150.00, of which one-half was paid in cash and the other half secured by notes payable with interest, in six and 12 months respectively, and for their payment a mortgage was given on the cemetery. Both the warranty deed and mortgage were signed in behalf of the congregation by Jacob Silber- man, Solomon Bendit, Sigmund Springer and Joseph Friedman. The cemetery, known in those days, as Champlain Street Ceme- tery, is still owned and kept up by the congregation and is re- ferred to as The Lafayette Cemetery.' It adjoins the Elm- wood Cemetery." `Relevance of Prophets' Viewed by Prof. Scott 'A& DR. BARNETT R. BRICKNER AND GEN. Bulgarian Court Demands Death For Ex-Premier SOFIA, (JTA)—The Bulgar- ian Peoples Court trying mem- bers of the former pro-Nazi gov- •ernments were urged this week to impose the death sentence on ex-Premier Bogdan Filov and members of his cabinet for their persecution and murder of thou- sands of Jews. Demanding the death penally, Chief Prosecutor Petrov re- viewed the testimony by many witnesses concerning the in- famOus treatment of Jews, and the confiscation of Jewish prop- erty and the deportation of Jews from Macedonia and Thrace and declared: "It is unfortunate that I cannot bring into court any witnesses among the deportees, because they have all been burnt alive." Petrov disclosed that during the four years of the fascist re- gime about $12,000,000 in taxes were squeezed out of Bulgaria's Jews. Scott's latest book, published by the Macmil- lan Co., is a volume , of great scholarship. It describes the message of the ancient prophets of Israel and indicates its vitality for human- ity in the present time. Dr. Scott, who is professor of Old Testament Literature at United Theological Seminary, Montreal, deals with the prophe- cies of Isaiah, Amos, Micah, Jere- miah, - Zephaniah. Pointing to Christianity's con- tributions to democratic ideals, he declares that much of the idealism came into Christianity from the Hebrew prophets. He declares that "this is the first reason the pr bets are relevant for modern democracy — that they belong to its spiritual an- cestry, through the interming- ling of the Hebrew-Christian and classical traditions. Jewish Palestine The Significant Statements in Record of America's Endorsement of Zionism Significant historic official re- lations between the United States and Palestine are outlined in a notable book published under the auspices of the American Zionist Emergency Council. A new edition of this volume with additional material is about to be issued by the Herald Square Press, Inc., of which Jacob Monsky is president. "America and Palestine: The Attitude of Official America and of the American People To- ward the Rebuilding of Pales- tine as a Free and Democratic Jewish Commonwealth," was prepared and edited by Reuben Pink, former Washington cor- respondent and.active communal worker, who now renders the same service to the Zionist move- ment as he did in 1918 with the book called "The American War Congress and Zionism," then is- sued by the Zionist Organization of America. In keeping with the character of the previous publication, the present volume brings the opin- ions of 77 members of the Sen- ate and 318 members of the House of Representatives, who voiced their sentiments in favor of Jewish national restoration in Palestine. Among. these opin- ions are those of seven Presi- dents of the United States, who have successively e x p r e s s e d their sympathy with Jewish na- tional aspirations in Palestine. This volume of 522 pages pre- sents a complete history of America's relations with Pales- tine for a period of more than half a century, recording the help which the United States render- ed to Jewish refugees and set- tlers seeking a haven in the Land of. Promise, as long ago as 1882, when Gen. Lou Wallace, the au- thor of "Ben Hur," was Ambas- sador to Turkey. Included in the book are all the documents relating to Zionist political ac- tivities, since the issuance of the Balfour Declaration, as well as an outline of Zionist history in the United States from the in-. ception of the movement. Mr. Fink's introduction states that the historic outline of the book was written by Bernard G. Richards, chairman of the Jew- ish Information Bureau.
