Seventeen additional rooms at U. S. Naval
- Hospital, St. Albans, New York, furnished by
Lodges and Auxiliaries of the Metropolitan
Council of Bnai Brith for the use of wounded
Service men, were dedicated on March 18.
Isador Lubin, government economist on the
,White House staff has been appointed the
American representative on the Moscow Re-
parations Committee which will determine the
price Germany must pay for the destruction
'mused by her, Secretary of State Stettinitis an-
nounced. Mr. Lubin, 48, served more than
eight years as U. S. Commissioner of labor
statistics.
Mrs. Sophie Gruenfeld, 88 year old refugee.
from Vienna who once received a decoration
from Emperor Franz Joseph for philanthropic
work for Jewish children, became an American
citizen.
OVERSEAS
Seven hundred Rome fascists have been ar-
rested in a police investigation which has re-
vealed the existence of a fascist organization
led by Italian students, teachers and officials,
which has resorted to kidnaping the children of
Italian Jews in order to curb the anti-fascist
activities of their parents.
In an editorial on March 14, the Manchester
Guardian points out that while no decision has
yet been reached with regard to a solution of
the Palestine problem, any future solution must
include the establishment of some form of a
Jewish State.

Sets $250,000 Budget

NEW YORK. (JTA)

A
budget of $250,000 for the pur-
pose of .securing a larger mem-
bership and for increased edu-
cational activities on a nation-
wide scale was adopted by the
American Council for Judaism
at its annual conference, it was
announced here. Lessing J.
Rosenwald was re-elected presi-
dent of the organization.
It was reported at the confer-
ence that the membership of the
Council comes from more than
300 communities throughout the
United States. Mr. Rosenwald,
in his presidential address, re-
viewed the year's . activities.
Rabbi Elmer Berger. executive
director, analyzed the situation
that led to the formation of the
Council and discussed its pro- 1
gram.

Jews in Cuba WOn't
Return to Belgium

The Hungarian Government has established
an office for the purpose . or investigating and
registering crimes committed by the Nazis and
the Szalasi regime against the Jews of Hun-
gary.
Two camps for the training of ChalutZim. pio-
neers for Palestine, have been .established near
Spaa, Belgium, accommodating 18 girls and
36 boys. Preparations are under way for open-
ing another three Hacsharah camps. •
• The Society of Jewish Writers and Artists in
Lublin has appealed to the London Writers
AssOciation for "relief in kind."
The Jewish Folksfarband of France, directed
by Mark Jahrblum, has resumed activities. Its
loan section is now operating with the object
of providing help. for . poor Jewish artisans and
shopkeepers by issuing them credits which will
enable them to restart their businesses or re-
establish themselves in their former trades.
Dr. A. Leon Kubovitski, rescue emissary. of
the World Jewish Congress, conducted negotia-
tions with the Catholic clergy in France and
Belgium regarding the restoration to their par-
ents or to the Jewish community of children
hidden in convents in these countries.
The new Romanian Government has dismis-
sed all Transylvanian police prefects who have
continued an anti-Semitic policy and have sabo-
taged the abolition of anti-Semitic laws.
The Swiss Government has decided to ex-
tend, for (*tree months, the permits of those
Jews rescued. from the Theresienstadt ghetto
and now in Switzerland.

Prosperous Restaurant

Survived in Bulgaria

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)—The
Philadelphia Federation of Jewish-
Charitiesthis week found itself
the proprietor of one of this city's
oldest and most prosperous
restaurants.
Harman L. Blackburn, owner
Of the Old Bookbinder's Restau-
rant, an 80-year-old concern
which did $500,000 worth. of busi-
ness last year, turned the estab-
lishment over to the federation
to do with . as it pleased.
"The federation can sell it for
$1 or $1,000,000," Mr. Blackburn
said. "There are no liabilities, no
mortgages. It is a going and
prosperous business."

ISTANBUL (JPS)—It is ve.•
ported here that an unpublished
census established that 33,000
Jews have survived in Bulgaria.
The Jews are organized in 3 3
community councils maintaining
close contact. with the Govern-
ment, and 2,200 Jewish childreit
under 13 attend the 15 religious
schools established by these
councils.
A total of 4,160 Jewish clin
dren under 12 attend secular
schools.
In 1940 there were about
48,000 Jews in Bulgaria and at
that time about 3,000 children
attended Jewish schools.
