Windsor Council Increases
Its Fund Quota to $60,000

Canadians Discuss
Welfare Fund Work

Cherniak Reports 880 Contributors Enlisted This Year;
Rosenthal Praises Youth Group; Assist Fund-Raising
For Hospital, Mo'os Chitim

A. D. Cherniak has informed the executive committee
of the Windsor Jewish Community Council that 880 pledges
have been made to the current fund-raising effort of the
Windsor community.
In view of the increasing demands made upon the com-
munity by relief needs and the Canadian Jewish Congress,

the Council has increased
campaign quota for this yeai to
$60,000.
Harry Rosenthal, president of
the Council, reports that the
Youth Council is enlarging its
scope of activities and that there
is a wealth of leadership mate-
rial in the youth group.
Authorization was given the
Jewish-Russian-Ukrainian Var-
band to conduct the traditional
drive for Mo'os Chitim Passover
relief funds, the money in Wind-
sor to be handled through the
Council.
Funds are being raised from
the Windsor Jewish community,
through the Council, for the
East Windsor Hospital and As-
sumption College.

Peretz Library,
Windsor, Opens Windsor Zionists
Reference Room Hear E. E. Gelber

A reference and reading room
has been opened by the Jewish
People's Library of the I. L.
Peretz School of Windsor.
Yiddish, Hebrew and English
periodicals and the most popular
books on Jewish subjects in the
three languages are available. A
competent librarian is •in charge.
More than 30 periodicals are
now being received at the library
and its reference shelves are
constantly being enlarged. There
is also a children's book shelf.
Young people are especially
urged to make use of the li-
brary's facilities.
Windsor Jews are asked to
assist in enlarging the library's
book shelves by „ contributing
important books.

of Detroit
acknowledge with gratitude
the receipt of a Scholarship

of Glynn Court, in honor of
the Bar Mitzvah of their son,
Murray, which will be ob-
served at the David W. Si-
mons Synagogue on Saturday,
April 21st.

Edward E. Gelber of Toronto,
president of the Ontario Zionist
Region, addressed an important
Zionist rally in Windsor on
Wednesday, March 14.

Mr. Gelber is vice president
of the Zionist Organization of
Canada and honorary vice presi-
dent- of the Canadian Jewish
Congress.

He is -chairman of the Canadian
Advisory Board to the American
Fund for Palestinian Institutions.
A member of the Canadian bar,
having graduated from Osgoode
Hall, Toronto, he has been a
member of the Palestine bar,
having lived in Palestine from
1935 to 1939 as a student at the
Hebrew University._
He is also a graduate of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America where he was ordained
Rabbi. In addition, he holds the
degree of Master of Arts from
the University of Toronto and
Columbia University.
Among the activities of the
Windsor Zionists is the sponsor-
ship of the radio program "Pales-
tine Speaks," over Station
CKLW.

Urges Observance by Jews Throughout U. S.;
$35,300,000 Needed to Meet Budget
HAMILTON, Ontario (JTA)—

Representatives of eight com-
munities attended an all-day
session here of the Committee of
Canadian Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds to discuss
more effective organization of
Canadian Welfare Funds. At the
morning session, presided over
by Harry Rosenthal, President
of the Windsor Community
Council, Florence Hutner, Exec-
utive Director of the United
Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto
presented an analysis, of budget
allocations made by Canadian
Welfare Funds, and recommend-
ed procedures for sound budget
practice. After discussion, a ser-
ies of recommendations for
sound budget practice were
drawn up.
The afternoon session, under
the chairmanship of Nathan
Adler of Hamilton, discussed
campaign methods. Reports were
presented by Sol Granek of St.
Catharines on campaign organ-
ization; Jack Foster of Guelph
on publicity; Archie D. Cherniak
of Windsor on soliciting of large
subscriptions; and Norman Edell
of Hamilton on cooperation be-
tween the different communities.
Under the chairmanship of
Ben Sadowski of Toronto, a spe-
cial luncheon session heard .a
report on the overseas' situation
presented by Max Perlman,
special representative of the
American Joint Distribution
Committee, who had just re-
turned from a 15-months' stay
in Italy and North Africa. Fol-
lowing Mr. Perlman's report,
Welfare Fund Policy with re-
gard to the proposed Emergency
Relief Campaign sponsored by
the Canadian Jewish Congress
was discussed.

Jews throughout the nation
were urged to observe Saturday,
March 31, as Passover United
Palestine Appeal Sabbath, in a
proclamation signed by out-
standing leaders in the Ameri-
can rabbinate.
Among those who signed the
declaration emphasizing the im-
portance of the UPA as the
agency- for the rescue and re-
demption of the survivors of
Hitlerism were: Rabbis Barnett
R. Brickner, Cleveland; Solo-
mon Goldman, Chicago; Israel
Goldstein, New York; Julius
Gordon, • St. Louis; James G.
Heller, Cincinnati; Joshua L.
Liebman, Boston; Irving Miller,
New York; Abba Hillel Silver,
Cleveland; and Stephen S. Wise,
New York.
Special Sermons
It is expected that more than
2,000 synagogues throughout the
country will observe the UPA
Sabbath and that their rabbis

will deliver special sermons de-
voted to the importance of the
Jewish Homeland in Palestine.
Through the nationwide UPA
campaign, American Jews are
being called upon to help meet
the 1945 budgets of its constitu-
ent agencies which amount to
$35,300,000. This sum is required
to provide for the immigration
and 'settlement in Palestine of
large numbers of the survivors
of Nazi oppression in Europe as
well as to promote the war ef-
fort and economic and cultural
development of the Jewish home-
land.
Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of
the Jewish Agency for Palestine,
will arrive from Palestine be-
fore the end of the month, it was
announced by Rabbi Heller, na-
tional chairman of the UPA.
Mr. Kaplan is recognized as
one of the outstanding person-
alities in the Histradruth, Jewish
Federation of Labor in Palestine,
