THE JEWISH - N

Jewish Religious
Life in Russia
Being Revived

MOSCOW (RNS) — Jewish re-
ligious life in the Soviet Union
Shows signs of widespread re-
vival. Althougli certain "basic
problems" persist in. relation to
the state, many points of conflict
have already been settled. This
was revealed here by Samuel
Solomonovich Chobrutsky, chair-
man of the Moscow Jewish com-
munity, in an interview with
Religious News Service.
He announced that plans are
under way to resume publication
of Jewish religious texts and to
reopen synagogues in liberated
areas. Questions expected to arise
in the near future, h_e said, in-
elude the religious training of
Jewish children and the_ estab-
lishment of a central training
college for rabbinical students.
'For the first time since the
Revolution, 50,000 Jewish- prayer
boOks and 50,000 Jewish calen-
dars will soon be printed, Mr.
Chobrutsky declared. He dis-
played 'a letter written by his
committee to Ivan V. Polyansky,
head of • t h e newly-organized
State Council of Religious Cults
in which Jewish leaders speci-
fied their needs in response to
an offer by the council to facili-
tate procurement of needed paper
supplief.

Congress Declines
Jewish Committee's
Bid to Conference

NEW YORK—Following a
meeting of its executive commit-
tee on March 5, the American
Jewish. Congress announced that
it has declined the invitation of
Judge Joseph M. Proskauer,
president of the American Jew-
ish Committee, to join in "an
informal conference" with a view
toward developing common ac-
tion on the basis of a three-point
post war program presented by
its "Peace Problems Committee."
In a letter to Judge Proskauer,
Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of
the Congress executive commit-
tee, said that the Congress as a
constitutent part of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress cannot
undertake to join with Jewish
bodies outside the Conference.
Such action, the letter declared,
would be destructive of the unity
of American Jewry established
through the Conference.
