Red Cross Head
Explains His
German Mission

BY DAVE JAROS
GENEVA (JPS)—P a 1 c o r) —
Prof. Carl Burckhardt, president
of the International Red Cross,
issued the following statement
here in answer to speculation re-
garding the purposes of his re-
cent visit to Germany:
I have recently conferred, in
the frontier region, with repre-
sentative German authorities in
regard to the transport of food,
clothes and medicaments. for war
prisoners and internees of all
nationalities, as well as in regard
to certain exchange operations.
All other information in regard
to the purpose of my visit to Ger-
many is entirely invented."
Various Swiss newspapers had
previously reported that Burck- •
hardt's. mission to Germany was
for the purpose of saving the
lives of allied war prisoners who
were threatened with annihila-
tion by the Germans, and also to
obtain the release of, or better
treatment for, civil deportees, in-
cluding Jews, who are in German
hands.

Palestine Question

NEW YORK Declaring that
"the Jewish people must not re-
main forever waiting in the
corridor," the American Jewish
Trade Union Committee for
Palestine urged that the Pales-
tine _question be placed on the
agenda of the forthcoming
United Nations Conference in
San Francisco.
In a statement issued here the
committee, which speakes for
millions of American workers—
both AFL and CIO—who have
passed resolutions endorsing its
program, protested the "disre-
gard of a long-suffering people's
just claims" and conveyed to
"our government and the gov-
ernments_ of Britain and the
Soviet Union the feeling of deep
disillusionment and apprehen-
sion" which is shared by its
members." —
