Passover began in November, when the National Jew-
to Make Up for Waiving

sacramental wine and Haggadahs for shipment to Jewish
soldiers and sailors overseas.

observed as "Sabbath Hagodol"

Today it can be said that
every one of the 500,000 Jewish
men and women in the Ameri-
can forces will be provided with
the necessary food and ritual ma-
terials enabling them to conduct
Sedorim and observe Passover.
Await Distribution
To date, under the world-wide
JWB Passover program, more
than 350,000 boxes of matzoth,
5,000 gallons of wine, and 115,000
Haggadahs have been shipped
by JWB and are awaiting dis-
tribution to Jewish servicemen
and women through regular
Army channels. In addition, 75,-
000 holiday leaflets describing
the significance and observance
of Passover and 700,000 greeting
cards will be made available.
. Beginning in November, over-
seas Passover supplies were dis-
tributed by JWB to every thea-
ter of war through the War
Transportation Division. Upon
notification from the Division
that transportation space is avail-
able, JWB begins shipment of
these supplies to the Ports of
Embarkation, from which point
they are sent to all theaters of
operation in charge of the com-
manding officer of each theater.
Distribution of Passover ma-
terials will be made by the Sen-
ior Chaplain of that area, in
many cases the Senior Jewish
Chaplain. Senior Chaplains of
every faith have been sent a re-
lease titled "Historical and Cere-
monial Aspects of the Observ-
ance of Passover," and asked to
duplicate it so that it may be re-
ceived by all chaplains in the
theater.
For the first time this year,
Naval personnel will receive
Passover supplies directly from
the commanding officer of each
theater. The Senior Chaplain of
every task force has been in-
structed to contact the appro-
priate commanding officer in or-
der to obtain necessary holiday
materials.
As in past years, Jewish com-
munities in Great Britain, the
Carribean Islands, South Ameri-
ca, North Africa, Italy, Egypt,
Palestine, Australia, New Zea-
land, Hawaii, India, Alaska, Iran
and elsewhere will provide home
hospitality for many Jewish men
and women in the Armed Forces
stationed in these areas and will
cooperate with the Jewish chap-
lains in arranging for communal
Sedorim. Supplies and funds
will be furnished by JWB.
Supply Depots Cover U. S.
Domestic shipments of Pass-
over supplies are sent by the
JWB to regional depots located
in seven main cities throughout

Isaacs an Editor
Of Manischewitz
Passover Brochure

---
Bernard Isaacs, superintendent
of the United Hebrew Schools of
Detroit, is one of the consulting
editors of the committee which
published "The Story of Pass-
over," a 20-page brochure pub-
lished by the Manischewitz Co.
This pamphlet, issued annually
and distributed locally through
the United Hebrew Schools, is
based on material originally
compiled by Hayyim Schauss.
In previous years, the pam-
phlet was published in smaller
form. This year it was expanded,
and the published result is a
real achievement for compact
and impressive interpretation of
the significance of Passover.
Beautifully illustrated, "The
Story of Passover" is a credit
to the efforts of the Manische-
witz Co. and to the managing
editor of the committee, I. Chaim
Pomerantz.

the country to await distribution
to every military installation,
camp and hospital in the U. S.
where Jewish members of the
Armed Forces are stationed.
Thousands o f persons a r e
working with the JWB in ar-
ranging Sedorim and Passover
services in local communities in
every part of the U. S. They
include Jewish chaplains, JWB
field workers, Christian chap-
lains, community volunteers on
the 632 JWB Army and Navy
Committees, as well as hospital
workers and rabbis associated
with the Board.
Reached by USO
-
Many of these remote military
posts will be reached by the
USO Mobile Service, which has
volunteered to bring JWB Pass-
over supplies to these out of the
way areas and to maneuver
areas as well, and by thousands
of Passover food packages pre-.
pared through the Women's Di-
vision of JWB.
Hospitalized Jewish veterans
will also be served under the
broad JWB Passover program.
In the 78 veteran's hospitals
which the National Jewish
Welfare Board serves through
its local Army and Navy Com-
mittees and Visiting Hospi-
tal Committees, Passover reli-
gious services and holiday pro-
grams are being planned. Where
patients are able to leave the
hospital, home hospitality or at-
tendance at community Sedorim
is being arranged.
At colleges where there are
military units, JWB is cooperat-
ing with Hillel by making avail-
able to Jewish personnel Pass-
over food and services. -

—"The Great Sabbath"—has been
set aside by the Vaad Horabonim,
the Detroit Rabbinical Council, as
J. N. F. Sabbath.
In a call issued by the Vaad
Horabonim, over the signature of
Rabbi Isaac Stollman, its secre-
tary, the orthodox rabbis explain
that the traditional Purim col-
lections for the J. N. F. were
waived this year because of the
collections made for the Vaad
Hahatzala fund to rescue Jews
from concentration camps.
To make up for this loss, and
taking into consideration the sac-
redness of land-r e d e m p t i o n
through the Jewish National
Fund, synagogues are asked to
devote this Sabbath to the ap-
peals for the J. N. F.

Brooklyn Family Has Seven
Sons With Armed Forces

NEW YORK (JPS)—Mr. and
Mrs. Abe Levy of Brooklyn have
seven of their nine sons serving
in the U. S. Army. The Levy
brothers are scattered in units
from France to New Guinea.

Jewish homes in Detroit again
will be opened this year for
servicemen and women during
Passover.
The Detroit Army and Navy
Committee of the National JWB
has contacted every serviceman
and woman throughout Michigan
and returns are now coming in
indicating their plans for the
holiday.
Those with wives and families
have been invited to join Seder
observances at Detroit homes
if they have leave. Passover
foods will also be available at
the Jewish Center all week for
servicemen passing through De-
troit.
Religious material and Pass-
over foods are being distributed
to every Army and Navy base
in the state.
Traditional Observance
In Detroit emphasis will be
placed on the traditional fam-
ily observance. At other mili-
tary bases in Michigan arrange-
ments have been made for Com-
munity Seders in smaller com-
munities where the number of
families is too small to provide
for large numbers of servicemen.
At Oscoda Air Base, men are
being invited to a Community
Seder in Bay City, arranged by
the Army and Navy Committee
headed by A. B. Roman of that
city.
At Fort Brady men are being
cared for in Saulte Ste. Marie
by the local Army and Navy

a report rendered by Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, director
of the Union of American He-
brew Congregations, upon corn-
pletion of a two-month tour of
the Western and Southern states,
the administrative committee of
the UAHC, meeting here, adopt-
ed a resolution of hope and
faith to be communicated to the
Jewish congregation in Rome as
a symbol of. spiritual solidarity
of world Israel in the hour of
trial for Jews everywhere.
"The Union of American He-
brew Congregations shares that
deep spiritual confidence, recent-
ly voiced by the historic con-
gregation of Rome in the eternal
faith of Israel and in its tri-
umph over its enemies without
and its apostates within."
