Allied Officials Reported
Against Certain Choices
as Rabbi of Rome

ROME—(Wireless) — (By Re-
ligious News Service) Appoint-
ment of a successor to Dr. Israel
Anton Zolli, Dormer Chief Rabbi
whose conversion to Roman
Catholicism has caused a pro-
found stir throughout Italy, will
not be announced officially for
some time, • according to Jewish
authorities here.
It was pointed out that before
Dr. Zolli can be replaCed, it will
be necessary to revise a statute
introduced by the former Fascist
government in 1930. It is un-
derstood that Allied officials have
counselled against certain can-
didates who have been suggested
for the post.
Regarding Dr. Zolli's future
work, associates believe' . his
erudition in Semitic literature
and languages would be useful
to the Vatican, particularly in
the Congregatio.. for Propagat-
ing the Faith.
A mass service stressing re-
ligious Unity was staged by the
Jewish community following
Zolli's conversion.
No mention was made of Dr.
Zolli by the officiating rabbi,
Dr. David Panzieri.
Maj. Meyer Berman, British
Army chaplain, and Capt. Jacob
Hochman, chaplain of the Am-
erican forces in Rome, described
Dr. Zolli's action as a "blow"
but said it should cause the
Jews of Rome to draw closer
together.
