Quotation of the Week

"Chaim Weizmann is not a Jewish chauvinist. He does note think Jews
are superior to other people. He does not measure peoples that way . He
is .a great leader precisely because he is not a demagogue. He does not
assault the world for its cruelties and stupidities. He does not flatter his
own people into believing that they are a peculiarly chosen and gifted race-
for him, mankind is still mankind, and its welfare takes precedence over
the * special welfare- of any nation. He is, for a national leader, curiously
detached. Only he thinks that the welfare of the Jews is not extricable
from the Welfare of mankind, and he moves in the direction of universal
law . . . The Jews are a nation of men with a peculiar religious and group
culture. They are unique in that they are not organized into a self-governed
state but carry their nationhood in their individual bosoms. Therefore their
life among men is abnormal . Instead of seeking equality, they themselves
instinctively seek and are granted 'tolerance.' Chaim Weizmann will not have
his people live on tolerance. He would have it share the experience and
•
responsibilities common to mankind."
-DOROTHY THOMPSON, in essay "The Mark
of `the Chosen," in the volume published in
Dr. Chaim Wei mane's honor and edited by
Meyer W. Weisgal.

JEWS AT THE PEACE TABLE
We are indebted to the Zioniit Review
of London for the 'accompanying cartoon
which we are reproducing from its col-
umns.

.

JewiSh participation in the councils of
the world has been so :eruelly curbed,
that the artist who drew this cartoon was
moved to express his sentiments on the
basis of the following z lines from Lord*
Byron's "Hebrew Melodies," written in
1814:
"The wild-dove 'bath her nest -
the fox his :cave,
Mankind their coimtry-
Israel but the grave."

THOSE.WHO- DECLARE WARS
Shortly _after the. Big. Three .Confer-
ence at Yalta, a report from Paris stated
that the invitational list for the United
Nation-S' meeting in San Francisco in
April would be limited to those nations
that would have declared war on the
Axis by March. .
The so-called "nie too" nations im-
mediately jumped on .- the band-.wagon.
Since ; jan=.::30, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay,
Venezuela;:. Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Iran,
Arabia and Lebanon, have entered - the
war against the-Aiis. - -
But the Jewish peo-ple, upon whom the
Axis had. declared war long before the
world conflict began-, remains -excluded
. from the councils of the nations 1:)f the
world.
.
We have been at war with the Nazis
from the very beginning, but we • are -be-
ing treated like beggars who must plead,
for our rights through intermediaries.
Yet history will rule that Byron was
wrong-that Jews reject his view that
for Israel there is: ."but the =grave,"
may lose more than. the terrible toll we
" have already paid . in - in the -battle
for justice.. But we do not give up the
fight. And until we will have attained
• all that has been pledged to us in Eretz
, Israel, as well as in the Galut, we do
. not give up the fight.

populations in liberated, occupied and

GOOD NEWS
The liberated portion of Holland is
setting a splendid example as regards
the Jewish refugee problem . . . The
Netherlands Association for Assistance to
Jewish Minors, with headquarters in Til-
burg, is doing a great job to restore Jew-
ish children to their parents if they are
still .alive, or else to their nearest rela- •
tives . If no relatives can be found,
the Association will arrange for the sup-
port and education of the orphaned
children . . . Bravo!

THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Jacob Billikopf, who probably knows
more about Jewish life in America than
any other man living, calls our attention
to an article on the Jewish community
in the Philippine Islands - . . . The article
is by Leopold Kahn and was written in
Manila in 1932.. • . Here are °Some. in-
teresting facts culled from Kahn's piece
. The year 1898 brought 500 Jewish
members of Uncle Sam's army of 60,000
to the Philippines . . . In 1908 ,a Mr.
Sinsberg of Singapore donated two Tor-
ahs to the Jews of. Manila on condition
that services be held regularly at least
during - the high holy days of each year
. . . When no services were held in 1909
and 1910 Mr. Sinsberg demanded the re-
turn of the Torahs, which were then sent
back to Singapore . . . In 1932_ Manila
boasted five Torahs, a modern synagogue
that cost $45,000 and burial grounds valu-
ed at $10,000 . . . Many of the early set-
tlers intermarried . . . In 1932 the Jewish
population numbered- 200.
