State Senate Unanimously
Adopts Palestine Resolution

Senators Follow House's Action on Rep. Eilstein`s . Measure
Putting Michigan on _Record as Urging, U. S. to Seek
U. S. Policy on Palestine Homeland

The Michigan State Senate followed the example set a week
earlier by the State House of Representatives and unanimously
adopted the concurrent resolution urging the U.-S. Government to
intercede in behalf of the establishment of a policy of free Jewish
immigration to Palestine and the creation of a democratic Jewish
Commonwealth there.
Rep. Jack Ellstein, (D), of Detroit, introduced the resolution
which had • the approval and support of both the Democratic and
Republican parties.
Rep. Lesinski and Sen. Stanley Nowak appeared before —the
Senate. Business and Rules Committee, of which Senator Higgins
is chairman, and - urged the approval of the resolution.
This committee's approval was followed by the unanimous
action of the Senate on Wednesday.
The Zionist Council of Detroit, which speaks for all Zionist
groups in the city, has issued a statement commending the sponsors
-of the resolution and its supporters in the State Legislature for
the action taken in behalf of the great humanitarian cause of
Zionism.
Rep. Ellstein and other supporters of the resolutions will be
honored by the 'Zionist Council of Detroit at a public meeting on .
Monday evening, Feb: 26, at the Rose Sittig Cohen Bldg., for their
services to the Zionist cause. Meyer W. Weisgal, Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann's personal representative in the U. S., will address this
meeting and will report on latest conditions in Palestine. He has
just returned from an extended tour of the homeland.
Since the adoption of the Palestine Resolution by both Houses
of the Michigan Legislature, word was received that the State Legis-
lature of Tennessee also had adopted a similar resolution, thus
making 22 states that formally have endorsed action in behalf of a
Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine.
Gov. Harry F. Kelly of Michigan has gone on record endorsing
the movement for the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth
in Palestine, and leaders of both political parties in the state have
strongly endorsed Jewish aspirations in Zion.

PALESTINE

Another group of 200 volunteers for the
.Jewish Brigade, comprised of persons from
many lands, has left Palestine for a special
training depot "somewhere in the Middle East,"
Moshe Shertok, Chief of the Political Depart-
ment of the Jewish Agency for. Palestine, re-
° ported.
An "airmindedness" eanripaign is to - be
launched by the Palestine Aero Club, which be-
gan activities nine years ago and is now plan-
ning on expansion, with the approaching climax
of the war in Europe. Branches a the Club
are located in Tel Aviv,' Jersualem, Haifa, the
Plain of Esdraelon, Jordan Valley, and Upper
and LoWer Galilee, and there are 500 members.
'There is also a Pilots' Union attached -to the
Club with a membership of '75 qualified Jewish
pilots, male and female.
The High Commissioner has appointed a
Board for Scientific Research. W. F. Crawford
is chairman of the Board, which is comprised
of Dr. Werner Senator, representing the He-
brew University; Prof. L. Farkas for the Sieff.
Institute; Dr. Bloch for the Technion of Haifa;
Prof.---Elazari Volcani, for the Agricultural Ex-.
periment Station, and Novemeysky and_Araten
• for the Palestine Industrial Council.
One of the first Hebrew books to be • pub-
lished in Italy since the country's liberation was
issued in Rome recently by . a Jewish soldier
of a Palestinian unit which took part in the
Salerno landings. Copies of the guide-book,
entitled "A Guide to Rome for Jewish Soldiers,"
have arrived in Jerusalem. As the first Hebrew
guide to Rome, it dwells on places and an-
tiquities connected with Jewish- history.

AMERICA

A national committee to tender a testi-
monial dinner to Dr. Abba Hillel Silver in
recognition of his continued services to Zion-
ism in the past decade, was formed at a meet-
ing in New York -with Dr. Emanuel Neumann
presiding. The announcement pointed out that
the committee will comprise a cross-section of
the Zionist movement in Airnerica, and stressed
Dr. Silver's contributions as national chairman
Of the United Palestine Appeal for a period of

seven years, and later as co-chairman of the
American Zionist 'Emergency Council and,
chairman of its executive committee. '
In an appeal for the resettlement in Pales-.
tine of 1,670 Jews recently rescued from Ger-
man concentration camps, the American
Zionist Emergency. Council attacked the plan
to send 'them to an UNRRA camp in Nor\th
Africa. They are in Switzerland.
Plans for the merger of two Denver hospital'
for the Jewish tubercular are reportedly again
being discussed. The institutions are-the Na-
tional Jewish Hospital and the Jewish Con-
sUmptive • Relief Society. The Council of Na-
tional 'Jewish Tuberculosis Institutions is re-
ported to be probing merger possibilities.

OVERSEAS.

The entire Jewish population of Mariampol,
Lithuania, nearly 8,000 people, was Wiped out
by a firing squad composed of Gerdian.s in
civilian clothes, who after participating in the
orgy dressed themselves in the best clothes of
their 'victims and rode , off, in a car to a res-
taurant • in Mariampol where food and wine
were awaiting them. On the next day the
same group took part in the murder of Lithu-
anian co-operati.Ve workers and other people
denounced by traitors as being 'supporters -of
the Soviet system.
The Dutch newspaper Veritas, published
in liberated territory, issued an appeal to the
Dutch population to contribute toward a fund
for the rebuilding of the synagogue at Maast-
richt, which had been destroyed by the Ger-
mans and Dutch fascists. The clergy has al-
ready contributed 'substantial amounts, the
newspaper revealed.
The Dutch Jewish violin virtuso Juda,
who hid withih. Holland throughout the period
of German occupation, broadcast on the Belgian
radio Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto. This was
the first- time since 1940 that this Concerto was
broadcast on the Belgian air waves.
Some 900 Jews, rernoved:from Theresienstadt
two months ago, are doing slaVe labor in the

Policy Committee Reveals
Region's Resolution

NEW YORK — The Tri-State
Zionist Region, comprising al-
most 9,000 members of the Zion-
ist Organization of America from
Pittsburgh, Western Pennsyl-
vania, parts of West Virginia and
Eastern Ohio, has unanimously
adopted a resolution deploring
the breach in the American Zion-
ist movement and demanding Dr.
Abba .Hillel Silver's 'recall to
political leadership. This waste
announced by the newly-formed
American Zionist Policy Com-
mittee.
The joint meeting of the ex-
ecutive and administrative. com-
mittees of the Tri-State Region,
held Feb. 11 in Pittsburgh, heard
Judge Louis Levinthal, of Phila-
delphia, who participated in the
discussion and delivered a
lengthy. address criticizing Dr.
Silver and defending the ZOA
administration's actions.
Dr. . Emanuel Neumann, of
New York, who 'had spoken
earlier on "The Political Situa-
tion in the Near East," refuted
Judge Levinthal's remarks and
. represented the progSilver point
of view.
At the conclusion of the dis-
eussion, the meeting voted un-,
animously to recall Dr. Silver
to leadership.

Fund Remits $250,000

NEW YORK — ACting on a
communication from Dr. Ch.
Barlas,. representative - in the
-Balkans for the Jewish Agency
for Palestine, the Palestine
Foundation Fund (Keren Hay-
esod) forwards a sum of $250,000
to its agency in Palestine for the
furtherance of - its program of
