Dr. B. Benedict Glazer, in brief
remarks at the services over
which he presided, took occasion
to point to the distressing times
in which the present anniversary
being. observed and uttered
prayer for an early victory and
for speedy and safe return of the
men and women in service.
,Mr. Lewis' Address
Pledges or continued service to
the community, -to Israel and to
America were made in an inter-
esting address by Leonard T.
Lewis, president of Temple Beth
EL
Dr. Leo M. Franklin conducted
the services.
The non-Jewish community's
greetings were brought by Dr.
Edgar de Witt Jones, president
of the Detroit Council of Church-
es. Dr. Jones paid tribute to the
rabbis of Beth El and related his
experiences in the Jewish com-
munity and ,told of his own and
his church's elation that they are
neighbors of Beth El.
Impressive Message
Dr. Glazer read an impressive
message of. greeting froin Dr. A.
M. Hershman in behalf of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
The principal address of the
evening was delivered by Dr.
Barhett R. Brickner, rabbi of
Euclid Avenue Temple, Cleveland.
Dr. Brickner based his address
on a description of his experi-
ences throughout the world on
his recent tour on behalf of our
government to the men in ser-
vice on all fronts.
He declared that the men on
the fighting front are clamoring
for a return to traditional ob-
servances, for a rededication to
the faith of their fathers, for a
revival of Jewish traditions and
Hebreww, and admonished his
.. audience to prepare to provide
strong spiritual' guidance . for
these men.
Praise for Beth El
Dr. Brickner took occasion to
praise the activities of Drs.
Glazer and Franklin and to laud
Beth El for nearly a century of
great service to Jewry and Ana--
erica.
A cello solo by Jascha
Schwartzman of the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra enhanced the
musical program during the im-
pressive services.
. Temple Beth El's 95th al-mi-
versary will also be observed
with an appropriate program at
the annual meeting of the con-
gregation in May.

Bnai Brith Opens
`Century' Campaign .

NEW YORK (JPS)—A "cen-
tury membership campaign" on
the 100th anniversary of the
founding of Bnai Brith, oldest
and largest national Jewish serv-
ice organization, was launched
by Henry Monsky, president of
Bnai Brith, at a covenant break-
fast tendered in his honor by
15 Brooklyn lodges and auxil-
iaries.
Monsky reviewed the activi-
ties of Bnai Brith and its af-
filiates—Anti-D e f a m a t i o n
League, Vocational Service Bu-
reau, Hillel Foundations, A. Z. A.,
Bnai Brith Girls, Bnai Brith
Young Men and Bnai Brith
Young Women.
A total of 26,630 men, women
and youths of the organizations
are serving in the armed forces,
and 62,000 members have donat-
ed blood to the Red Cross.

Gathering Tonight

Prof. James H. Sheldon of
New York, chairman. of Non-
Sectarian Anti-Nazi League, for-
mer professor of government at
Boston University, will speak on
the subject "Can Germany Turn
Military Defeat Into a Political
Victory?" at the Bnai David
Friday evening gathering tonight
at the synagogue on Elmhurst
and 14th Streets.
Prof. Sheldon, who recently
was named chairman of the New
York Metropolitan Council on
Fair Employment Practice, will
be introduced by Rabbi J. S.
Sperka. Cantor. Gartenhaus will
direct the musical prOgram. The
public is invited.
Programs arranged by Bnai
David for Friday night gather-
ings include the following lec-

Feb. 2, Isaac Franck; Feb. 9,
Rev. Maurice Perlzwerg, former-
ly of London, England, Dr. L. M.
Birkhead, national ' director of
Friends of Democracy; Feb. 23,
address by Rabbi Sperka at con-
cluding Friday night gathering.

Beth El Men's Club
To Hear Dr. Slosson

Prof. Preston Slosson, head of
the history department of the
University of Michigan, will ad-
dress the Men's Club of Temple
Beth El on Wednesday evening,
Feb. 7, and will speak on world
affairs.
This meeting, which will be for
members only, will feature a
Time Magazine current events
quiz with prizes. A social hour
will follow and refreshments will
be served.•
The Beth El Men's Club mem-
bers will be hosts to the Senior
Scouts of the Temple Troop' and
the High School students of the
religious school.

Gathering Monday

Rabbi 0. Asher Reichel, exec-
utive director of Cincinnati
Young Israel, will address a
Hamisha Asar gathering of Yesh-
ivath Beth Yehudah sponsored
by Detroit Young Israel next
Monday, 8:45 p. m., in the Yesh-
ivah building, Dexter and Cort-
land. He will speak on "Yeshi-
vah and Community."
Rabbi Reichel is a graduate of
the Yeshivah College, upon the
faculty of which he served for
some time subsequent to his
graduation.
Young Israel members also
will greet Cpl. Harry Blitz, a
former active member, who is
here for a short stay between
assignments.

Dr. Glazer to Talk
On Public School
Religious Training

The very important issue af-
fecting the proposals for release
time education in the public
schools will be discussed this
Fridear by Dr. B. Benedict Glazer
at the Sabbath Eve services of
Temple Beth El.
The topic of Dr. Glazer's ser-
mon will be "Religious Education
and the Public Schools—An An-
alysis of a Vital Problem Which
Affects All Americans."
Julius Chajes conducts the
Temple Choir during the services
and Jason Tickton is at the or-
gan. The Sisterhood is in charge
of the social hour after services.

Dr. Henry A. Atkinson
Speaks on Palestine
In Midland, Bay City

Dr. Henry A. Atkinson, chair-
man of the Christian Council on
Palestine, author and lecturer on
religious and international mat-
ter, addressed the Rotary Club
of Midland, Mich., Thursday, on
"Palestine in the Post War
World".
His lecture was sponsored by
Leonard Bergstein, member of
the Midland Rotary Club. On the
same day he addressed the
Ministerial. Association of Bay
City, and spoke to a public meet ,
ing that evening at the Jewish
Community Synagogue. The ar-
rangements for Dr. Atkinson's
visit to the community were in
charge of Rabbi Irving Ganz and
Louis Harrison.

Yeshivah Beth Yehudah to Hold
3d Annual Patrons' Dinner Feb.11

vath Beth. Yehudah, Sunday,
Feb. 11, 6:30 "p.m., in. the Social
Hall of Congregation Shaarey

This affair, COMM einorating
the dedication .of the Yeshivah.
at Dexter and Certland 'in Feb-
ruary, 1942, marks the gathering
of a prominent cross, section of
Detroit Jewry who contribute
$25 or more toward the main-
tenance of the institution.
Morris Mohr, chairman of the
Yeshivah budget and finance
committee, is in. charge of the
journal program.
Yeshivah in 27th Year
Founded by the late Rabbi
Yehudah Leib Levin, the Yeshi
vah is now in the 27th year and
has an enrollment- of more than
500 students. Its departments
include afternoon classes for boys
attending the public schools and
Wayne University; Beth Jacob
School for Girls; the Day Scohol,
combining a program of publie
education along with the Yeshi-
vah curriculum; and the Hebrew
Kindergarte"h for, children of
pre-school. age.
In addition to elasses held in
the main building, groups meet
at 122219 Dexter; 12330 Dexter;
Congregation Bnai David, Elm-
hurst and 14th; Congregation
Beth Tefilo Emanuel, Taylor and
WOodrow Wilson; and Hampton
School, 18460 Warrington Dr.
Two Yeshivah - owned buses
transport students from and to
their homes daily.
The teaching staff includes 14
men and six 'women:
Budget. Set at $85,000 ,
The budget for the current year
is $85,000, 30 per cent of which
will be covered by tuition:fees.
The Ladies of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, help finance the Beth
JacOb School and Kindergarten
and part of the building main-
tenance. Synagogue and organ-
izational .contributions, member-
ship dues, donations and -bequests
constitute the bulk of the income.
New classes for the kinder-

garten and the first four years
of the, public school program
are now in formation. This de-
partment, opened last Septem-
ber, benefits from regular in-
spection of the Detroit Board of
Education and Berard of Health.
A complete course in Hebrew
and English studies is offered
between 9 and 4 daily. Warm
lunehes are served.

"The Ten Commandments A-re
The Cause for Which We Fight"
will , be the subject of Rabbi
Leon Fram's sermon at the
bath Eve services of Temple Is-
rael, Friday night, Feb. 2, in the
Lecture Hall of the Detroit in-
stitute of Arts.

Rabbi Frain will refer to the re-
cent collection of short stories,
"The Ten. Commandments," edit-
ed by Simon and "Schuster.
At this service Gerald Blitz,
son of Mr. and Mrs.. Albert A.
Blitz, will celebrate his Bar Mitz-
vah. At the social hour, the • con-
gregation will be guests Of Mr.
and MrS. Witt, in honor of their
son.

Topic of Rabbi Nathan

"Freedom In a New World,*
is the subject of the address to
be delivered by Rabbi Jacob J.
Nathan at late Friday evening
services, Feb. 2, at 8:15, at Con-
gregation Bnai Moshe.
Services are conducted by
Cantor David Katzman and are
concluded at 9:45; after which
the Sisterhood serves- refresh-
ments in the banquet hall. The
public is invited.
