• A new and extensive Palestine reforestation plan which envi-
sions the planting of millions of trees 'has been made known on
the occasion of .Hamisha Asar b'Shevat, known in Jewish tradition
as Trees' New Year, and will be observed in Jewish communities
" throughout the nation on Monday, Jan. 29.
The plan, which was conveyed by the Forestry Department
of the Keren Kayemeth in Jerusalem to the Jewish National Fund
' in the U. S., calls for the planting of a variety of trees (like those
depicted above) in areas totaling 42,000 dunams in the hill country
and 7,000 dunams in the plains. The program calls for the creation
'of new forests which ultimately will comprise 14,700,000 trees to
be planted over a period of 13 years.
Feature of the observance of TU b'Shevat in Eretz Israel is
the part being taken by the youth in planting ceremonies, the day
marking the height of the tree planting season.

Urges Jewish Leaders
Enlist Aid of Labor

Editor The Jewish News:
I was especially interested in
your editorial • entitled "Ameri-;
ca's Forces for Justice". the
Jan. 5 issue of the Jewish. News:
This editorial gives me an op-
portunity to "spout" off on one
of my favorite subjects. I • have
been affiliated with the CIO as
a member and a worker since its
inception and feel that I can Say
that the leaders of the CIO would
be very happy to extend their
hand in friendship to the Jewish
People. Not only that,. the
"wordy" resolution would • be
translated into action if the Jew-
ish leaders would tell the labor
movement what it is they could
do on the question of anti-Semi-
tism.
Any large body of organized
labor has either an inter-racial
committee, an anti-discrimination•
committee or some committee
that works along these lines.
Principally they work with Ne-
groes, simply because the Negro
organizations come to them with
their problems and their -pro-
grams and ask for assistance.
I work very closely with the
the Greater Detroit and Wayne
anti-discrimination committee in

County Industrial Union Coun-
cil, and I know of no requests
made by Jewish leaders. or Jew-
ish organizations asking us to
work together on some plan, or
presenting us .. with a program
which we might carry out and
even trying to find out whether
or not we have a program to
combat anti-Semitism.
The cancer of anti-Semitism is
in the body of the ordinary guy
in the shop. Education- , should
be done down below, among the
rank and file union Member.
There is no organization better
equipped to do this than the
Unions, but we, the Jewish peo-
ple,_ will have to tell them what
to do and how to do it.
Very sincerely yours,
EVE NEIDELMAN
