Hundreds Submit Names of
Men and W omen in Service
Sgt. Ethel Manason
At Hanukah Service
In, Chapel in Italy
Hundreds of additional names of Jewish men and women
in the armed forces have been submitted to the DetrOit Army
and Navy Committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation since
the publication of the list of names of those already on record
began to appear in the columns of The Jewish News. -
Those who have not yet submitted the complete records
of relatives or friends in service are asked to do so at once
through the Jewish Welfare Board, 8400 Woodward, MA.
8400.
•
Those desiring war record blanks should call the Welfare
Board.
An additional list of men and women in service follows':
The military authorities and
the Jewish Welfare Board have
made it possible for our service-
men and servicewomen to cele-
brate the Jewish holidays in the
traditional :man-
ner though they
be stationed
thousands of
miles away
I r om home;
A recent re-
lease from Al-
lied headquar-
ters in Italy tells
of the Hanukah
rites held in a
Sgt. Manason military chapel
there for the Jewish - peronnel of
both the American and British
armies. The candles were kindl-
ed by the chaplain, Capt. Henry
Tavel of Wilmington, Del.
- Among those present at the
services were Sgt. Ethel Manason,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maur-
ice Manason, 2628 Fullerton Ave.
Sgt. Manason, who is a grad-
uate of Northern High and who
attended Wayne University, was
employed in the city offices
fore her departure for the armed
forces in January of 1943. First
stationed at Des Moines, Ia., she
was later transferred to Kansas
and then sent to North Africa
15 months ago. She now is serv-,
ing as secretary to a Colonel.

A Miraculous Escape
Sgt. Louis Klein s Heroism
Rewarded by Four Citations
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Klein of
9909 McQuade Avenue received
a most interesting letter from
their son, T/Sgt. Emil, -describ-
Sgt. Klein
T/Sgt. Klein
ing his reunion with their other
son, Sgt. Louis, in Liverpool. He
writes of Louis' experiences in
combat before being wounded
and returned to England for hos-
pitalization and -retraining.
Sgt. Klein obtained this infor-
mation with great difficulty, for
his brother was reluctant to dis-
cuss his exploits claiming that it
brought back memories of pals
being blown to bits and others
dying horribly. He attributes his
miraculous escape to the fact that
"my number wasn't up."
In France on D-Day
•
Arri#ing in France on D-Day,
he landed near St. Mere Eglise
on the Normandy coast and then
proceeded along the Cherbourg
Peninsula, finally participating
in the capture of Cherbourg.
