Jewish Agency Asks Peace
Among American Zionists

Palestine and British Leaders Voice Plea for Settling o
Differences; Senator Taft Plans to Re-Introduce
Palestine Resolution During Present Congress

TEL AVIV, (Palcor)—An appeal for peace in American Zionist
ranks was voiced by Moshe Shertok, Chief of the Political Depart-
ment of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, at a press conference here.
Answering questions concerning differences within the Ameri-
can Zionist Emergency Council, Mr. Shertok said:
"The Jewish Agency is interested in a united Zionist movement
in America. We aren't aware of eny diyergence over .fundamental
Zionist issues. The present dispute has arisen only over matters of
competence. We are informed that our colleagues in America will
support all efforts for restoring and strengthening Zionist 'unity
and co-ordination."
Mr. Shertok also revealed that Dr. James G. Heller, National.
Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, soon will visit Palestine.
The Jewish Agency's political chief stated' that "the feeling
' prevails that awareness of the destructive results of °terrorism has
deepened in Jewish Palestine, whose opposition and courage to
withstand intimidation and exhortation have strengthened."

British Zionists Regret Controversy
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The conflict between Dr. Stephen S. Wise
land Dr. Abba Hillel Silver with regard to Zionist tactics in the
United States is a personal one rather than a matter involving basic
principles, MoShe Shertok, head of the political department of the
Jewish Agency, declared at a press conference here.
(The Zionist Review, official Zionist organ in Britain, in
an editorial in the current issue, expresses regret over the
Silver-Wise conflict and urges them "to end the present public
controversy and resume their great work in behalf of the
common cause.")

PALESTINE

AMERICA

The ancient town of Safed in Upper Galilee
was illuminated by electricity for the first
time last Saturday night when a current pro-
vided by the Palestine Electric Corporation
was switched on, on the third anniversary of
the death of. Pinchas Rutenberg, founder of
the Corporation. His brother, Abraham Ruten-
berg, was included among those attending the
ceremony. Safed, with a mixed Arab-Jewish
population, was impeded in its development
due to the lack of electricity.
A group of 331 Jewish immigrants, 303 of
them from Yemen and 28 youth emigres from
Turkey, arrived here Jan. 1. The youths were
brought by the Youth Aliyah (Immigrants)
Bureau of the Jewish Agency for. Palestine.

Efforts to provide Spanish speaking rabbis
and teachers for Jewish communities. in Latin
America, Hebrew-Spanish dictionaries and He-
brew-Spanish text books, will be made by . the
National Mizrachi Committee for Jewish educa-
tion, sponsored by the Mizrachi Orthodox
Zionist Organization in response to a plea by
a delegation of Jewish leaders representing the
Jewish communities in Uraguay, Colombia,
Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador,
Costa Rica, Mexico and Cuba, for aid in ad-
vancing Jewish religious education in those
countries, which, the delegates reports, is in a
"low state."

Senator Taft Intends to Revive Resolution
NEW YORK, .(JTA)—Senator Taft of Ohio, one of the spon-
sors of the Palestine Resolution, intends to re-introduce the measure
in the present session of Congress, it was revealed .this week by
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, who recently resigned as co-chairman of the
Zionist Emergency Council.
Dr. Silver, addressing a press conference, attacked Dr. Israel-
Goldstein, Dr. Nahum Goldmann and Dr. Stephen S. Wise charging
them with sabotaging efforts to secure passage of the resolution.
• ,_ "Dr. Wise strenuously objected to this line of procedure," Dr.
Silver declared. "He did not want the President 'annoyed' by our
insistence and our persuasion. He yielded to the pressure of the
.Council and thereafter, far from using his energies vigorously to
persuade the Secretary of State and the President, he seriously in-
terfered with me in carrying out the clear mandate of the Council."
Replying to Dr. Goldstein, Dr. Silver reminded the President
Of the Zionist Organization of America that on Dec. 5, he, himself,
sent• a telegram to every member of the Senate Foreign Relations
•Committee urging them "to report out favorably the Palestine
resolution for adoption by the present Congress."
Having sent this telegrain, Dr. Goldstein appeared in Washing-
ton 48 hours later to urge the same senators not to pass the resolu-
tion, Dr. Silver charged.

Zionist Emergency Council Completes Reorganization
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The American Zionist Emergency Coun-
Cil this week announced completion of its reorganization, reporting
that . Chaim Greenberg, Zionist Laborite leader, has been elected
chairman of its executive corinnittee.
'Herman Shulman was elected chairman of a new smaller ad-
ministrttive committee responsible to the exectuive committee. The
new body will consist of the heads of the Council's four constituent
organizations—Zionist Organization of America, Mizrachi,
Zion and Hadassah—together with its chairman, the chairman of
the executive committee and of the Council, and representative of
the Jewish Agency.
Two executives of the Council announced that they have re-
signed in protest against "the crippling of Dr. Silver's program.
They are Harry , L. Shapiro, executive director of the Council, and
Harold P. Manson; the -organization's director of information.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, ZOA president, emphasized that Dr. Silver
broke party discipline by pressing for passage of the resolution at a
time when the Council, including Dr. Silver, had voted not to press
fOr Congressional action since the State Department was opposed.

Poale-Zion, Mizrachi Ask Zionist Unity
NEW YORK (JPS)—The Jewish Morning Journal quotes the
following statement by David Wertheim, secretary of the Poale-
Zion, following the election of Hayim Greenberg: "We have corr-
Sistently supported Dr. Silver, despite his errors. It is of little im-
port who is right, within the ranks of the General Zionists—Dr. Wise
or Dr. Silver. It has become an internal ZOA matter. Zionism can-
not wait. The united effort must continue."
The Jewish Morning Journal quotes Leon Gellman, President
of Mizrachi, as follows: "We deplore the action of Poale-Zion, which
contradicts its attitude throughout the current crisis; it is uncom-
radely . . Our stand is unchanged. We support Dr. Silver's con-
sistent policy; we have remained within the American Zionist
Emergency Council, even as Dr. Silver himself has remained a
member of the Council." -
With regard to Mizrachi who, together with the Poale-Zion, had
voted against accepting the resignation of Dr. Silver, Mr. Wertheim
said: "Mizrachi follows, we believe, an erroneuous path. The
American Zionist Emergency Council should not be split. Mizrachi
proposed that we work together. Now is the time for unity. That
is why Mizrachi and we do not see eye to eye."

"That's 'swell. Johnny! Now pull the
thread through with your right hand."

How They Carried Out Suicidal Plan
Medical Stenographers
LONDON, (JTA)—The Polish Telegraphic Agency reported Occupational Therapists
this week how a group of 35 Jewish engineers died in a suicide
action which destroyed a German rubber factory in Silesia just
befdre the Germans started their present offensive on the Western
Front.
The plant . and the stores of tires which were intended for the
use of the German army were blown up in an explosion, the report
said. In addition to the Jewish engineers, all the German super-
visors and many Nazi workers were killed.
The report. received by the Polish Government-in-exile, through
underground channels, said . that the engineers were kept in the
factory because they could not be replaced. In reprisal, the Ger-
WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS
mans hanged all the Jewis in the district.
The report emphasized that the engineers knew that they would
perish in carrying out their plan. They smuggled dynamite into
the factory and placed it among machinery, power installations and
stores. The fusing was set to explode immediately.
