V. Shaw, chief secretary of the govern- ment, at .a monthly meeting with editors of Palettine news- papers. He said: "The governmen t is gratified to observe definite signs of • an awakening sense o duty on the part of the public i n countering the terrorist menace. (In London, Colonial Secretary Oliver Stanley declared that "the police are now receiving more help than before the assassina- tion of Lord Moyne" in its efforts to combat the terror in Palestine, but there is still "room for im- provement." He refused, how- ever, to make a full statement on the terror, as requested by Lady Astor. ) (Terrorist activities in Palestine were maintained to a large ex- tent by means of extorted monies, the Palestine police announced in reporting the capture of a num- ber of extortionists. The extorted monies were found on the per- sons arrested, the police said). Shaw also stated that ...the gov- ernment was "fully alive to .the need to accelerate building" both for the returning soldiers and for ordinary householders. The coun- try requires 125,000 rooms, be- sides another 44,000 which are to replace slums. Construction would be left to private enterprise, such as Shik- hun, the Housing Co-operative of the Histadruth, Jewish Palestine's Federation of Labor. Shikhun'S building projects at Tel Aviv and Kiryath Hayim particularly have impressed him, Mr. Shaw stated. No Decision on Mayor No decision has as yet been made regarding the nomination of a new mayor for Jerusalem, he said. The Jewish and Moslem Communities each press for a mayor of their faith. The Jews point to the fact that they con- stitute the majority- in Jerusalem. Rothschild Kin Disputes Article By Cooper. in Life A scene at a Hadassah hospital in Palestine where a nurse is •providing care for a new-born infant, Baroness Claims References by Associated Press Head Are Wrong Ribla With Folks Chorus in Concert NEW YORK (JPS)-Dispu't- ing references to the Rothschilds in a recent article it Life maga- zine by Kent Cooper, Associated Press head, the Baroness Guy De Rothschild writes to the edi- tor of the magazine that "one would expect that the head of Associated Press, while crusad- ing for unbiased news, Would base his arguments on more ac- curate information." The same issue carries a reply by Mr. Cooper. The text of both letters follows: "In the Nov. 13 issue of Life, Mr. Kent Cooper opens his ar- ticle, 'Freedom of Information,' with the following statement: `Before and during the first World War the great German news agency, Wolff, was owned by the European banking house of Rothschild, which had its central headquarters in Berlin. A leading member of the firm was also Kaiser Wilhelm II's personal banker, friend and loyal subject.' Facts Related "The facts are the following: "1. The banking house of Rothschild never at any time had its headquarters in Berlin. "2. The Frankfurt branch of the Rothschild bank was dis- solved shortly after the death of its leading member, Wilheim- Carl von Rothschild, which oc- curred in 1901. After that date no male member of the family was resident in Germany. "3. No member of the firm was Kaiser Wilhelm II's personal banker. "4. The banking house of Rothschild has never at - any time owned the German news agency, Wolff." Life's editors . add this foot- note: Only Son of Baron "The Baroness Guy de Roth- schild belongs to the French branch of the family. Her hus- band, now a lieutenant in the French army, is the only son of Baron Edouard and financial heir to the French banking in- terests. To her charges Mr. Cooper replies: 'I did not mean to infer that Wolff was owned by Rothschild's proper. Wolff was owned, however, by Dr. Paul von Schwabach, senior partner of Bleichroder, a private banking house internationally known as RothSchild's powerfill Berlin affiliate. Von Schwabach was also the personal banker of Kaiser Wilhelm II.' At one instance two policemen,. armed with tommy guns, tried to keep enthusiastic pedestrians at a distance. Viscount Gort motion- ed his body guard not to. jostle the crowds. With something less than a full house to play to, the Jewish Folks Chorus presented Gertrude Ribla as guest artist in solo and in con- junction with the chorus, at the Masonic Temple, Sunday after- noon. Miss Ribla, singing over a cold, gave some of the warmest so- prano singing heard in some time. With Margaret Mannebach at the piano, she sang two operatic arias and a group of songs, the best of which was the difficult "Malke's Monologue" by Lazar Weiner. Miss Ribla sang beautifully in Schubert's "Miriam's Song of Triumph" with the chorus. We last heard this with the same group starring • Regina Reznik who has since made musical his- tory in her thrilling Metropolitan debut ,in "Trovitore." There can be no question of the improved musical stature> of the chorus in the intervening months. But the repertoire of the group could stand some over- hauling. I found them at their best in a new number by Julius Chases, "Ma Yafim Haleilot", ar- ranged by Leo Low. Both the composer and the arranger can be proud of their music as it was offered by the Folks Chorus. Solo lines were carried by Ruth Goldman and Rose Schecter whose rich alto was particularly pleasing, Miss Goldman also soloed in Weinberg's arrange- ment of the "Gettysburg Ad- dress" with Ellis Freedson as a very competent narrator. Henri Goldberg, the choir's regular director, was assisted by Aliza Stullman at the piano and Robert Delany at the organ. —A. R. B.
