Palestine Resolution Is Tabled
At the Request of State Dept.

Senate Committee, Votes, 12.8;
To Delay Action; Vandenberg
Led Fight for Cause of Zionism

(Exclusive to The Jewish News)
WASHINGTON — The U. S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on
Monday voted; 12 to 8, to table the pending Palestine Resolution, which had
been approved by the House Foreign Relations Committee a week earlier.
Sen. Tom Connally (Dem., Tex.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee, stated that there will be no action on the Resolution during
the present session, and revealed that his committee acted in accordance with
the request of the State Department.
At the same time, the State Department issued a statement declaring:
"The Department has the utmost sympathy for the persecuted Jewish
people of Europe and has been assisting them through active support of the -
work of the War Refugee Board and in every other possible way. The De..
partment considers, however, that the passage of the Resolution at the
present time would be unwise ?rorn the standpoint of the general international
situation, and has so informed the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations."
Prior to the action of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary
of State Edward R. Stettinius received a Zionist delegation consisting of Dr.
Abba' Hillel Silver, Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Dr. Israel Goldstein.
