Hostesses' Share in JWB-USO Work

By MRS. JULIAN H. KROLIK
Chairman, Jewish Welfare Board-USO Hostess Committee

Five -hundred hostessess — young, attractive and friendly —
are the one indispensable feature of the USO-JWB recreation pro-
gram. Responsible staff and committee people may plan and super-
vise with skill and imagination and the program will be better for
it, but without the girls there would be no,. pro-
gram at all. Girls plus food plus pleasant sur-
roundings are what the boys. want -- and if
something has to be- omitted, it can't be the girls.
The hostesses,
• all over 18, are your daughters
and their friends, coming from every part of
Detroit and every type of Jewish home. A com-
mittee of older women, carefully trained by their
own young sons and daughters in what is de-
sirable in a "date," interviews the girls and
selects them. They must be attractive, well-
mannered; cheerful and adaptable. They must like
people. Most of our girls fit this pattern pretty
Mrs. Krolik
completely.
Following a training session, hostesses are assigned to teams
of 30 girls each. Two senior hostesses are in charge of each team.
The seniors are the heart of the Detroit JWB set-up. They have
planned and carried the program from its beginning. All are young
business and professional women with varied backgrounds in com-
munity volunteer work. They are competent, loyal, pleasant to work
with, resourceful in emergencies, painstaking in supervision and
dependable. They plan the parties and see to it that the affairs run
smoothly. They work hard and intelligently and deserve very special
words of praise and thanks.
All teams serve on a rotating schedule, so that every girl gets
a chance at every type of party. Each team has an average of three
assignments a month. There are swimming parties teas and break-
fasts in the JWB headquarters, evenings at the 'downtown USO,
parties at- the Great Lakes Club, dances at nearby posts. In the
summer there are frequent picnics. A group also goes on Friday
nights to services at Romulus Army Air Base and Selfridge Field.
For many of the parties the girls contribute the food themselves. On
all trips the girls pay their own bus fare.
To the servicemen the girls mean friendship, rather than ro-
mance They are fun today and gone tomorrow.. Each girl is a symbol
of the Girl Back Home—or often enough, of a wife and baby.
JWB girls have proved themselves adaptable and pleasant hostesses
to the great variety of servicemen whom the Detroit USO entertains.
Few of the boys are• Jewish,
New hostesses are taken on about every six months. Because
hundreds of girls would like to serve and only a small part of them
can be used, there is always a long waiting list.. The plan has been
to keep the list constantly changing so as to give as many girls as
possible a chance to participate.
The program was originally set up by Mrs. Joseph M. Welt, the
first chairman, and has been carried out by two staff members,
Hannah Ferman, who left in February 1944, and was followed by
Rosalind Rice. The chairman is also .a member of the Volunteer
Service Committee of the downtown USO. All agency regulations
follow the pattern laid out by this central committee.
The present JWB hostess committee consists of Mrs. - Hyman C.
Broder, Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich, Mrs. Max R. Frank, Mrs. Lewis B.
Daniels, Mrs. Maurice Klein, Mrs. Hershel V. Kreger, Mrs. Gilbert
Michel, Mrs. Samuel R. Glogower and the chairman.
Servicemen have found Detroit a "good" town and have written
home about it, and for that both girls and committee may be grateful
and pleased.
