Weizmann's Sister Reminisces

Describes • Zionist *Leader's
First Scientific Discovery

By MRS. CHAYA WEIZMANN LICHTENSTEIN
(Sister of Dr. Chaim Weizmann)

Chaim used to write his family
weekly. Whenever, for some rea-
son or, other, he was beyond
schedule, his next letter would
contain profuse apologies. Once
several weeks had passed with-
out a letter from him. Father,
worried, telegraphed Chaim. A
letter came explaining that his
silence was due to- his absorption
in a special research project
which may lead to an important
discovery. Chaim wrote us that
the authorities at the University
of Berlin were extremely cour-
teous, permitting him fullest use
of their laboratories, at all hours.
It had already happened that he
spent stretches of 24 hours on
end at his work.

once for the manufacture of the
dyes. Chaim, impressed by the
prestige of the two scientists,
signed a contract, received an
advance of several thousand
marks, and felt happy.
In his next letter Chaim wrote
that he would no longer be a
burden on father, and w 6 u 1 d
even be • able to help his broth-
ers and sisters. to continue their
studies.
A half a year passed, Prof. Fe-
kete had begun to construct the
factory and prepare the equip-
ment. But an explosion in one
of his factories, led him into
bankruptcy. Meanwhile the na-
ture of the discovery had be-
come known, and things did not
turn out as we had hoped.
When foather heard of Prof.
Fekete's bankruptcy, he . smiled
and quoted a White Russian vil-
lage proverb, "Mikita never had
a groat and never will have one."
He was little moved by expecta-
tions of material success. He was
proud of the fact that his son
was on the road to greatness as
a scientist. Material success mat-
tered little.

One bright cold February -day
we received a telegram from
Berlin. Father's hands trembled
as he fumbled with the enve-
lope. His eyes grew bright as he
cried: "Rachel! Children! Chaim
has made his discovery. We shall
receive a detailed letter tomor-
row!"

, PARIS, (JTA)—Former Pre-
mier Leo Blum is living with his
wife under house arrest in a
village som,ewhere in Germany,
his daughter-in-law, Rene Blum,
revealed here. Contact with him,
she said, had been maintained
through his son, Robert, a pris-
oner in Germany, to whom he
wrote and who relayed news of
him up to Sept. 30.
Blum said his health was ex-
cellent, but his family is worried
because they have been unable
recently to send their usual bi-
monthly food packages. They
have tried to send the packages
through Switzerland, but the
Swiss insist that they be fur-
nished with his address, which
obviously is not known.
In his letters, Mme. Blum re-
vealed, the former Popular Front
leader advocated a United States
of Europe and a powerful League
of Nations. He told of having
written a book, "Echelle Hu-
maine" (The Ladder of Human-
ity) while imprisoned at Ft.

will be published here.
