Jewish Centers', Ys'
Role in War Effort
Viewed at Parley

More than 200 delegates and
visitors, representing 37 YMHAs,
Jewish Centers and kindred or-
ganizations in the midwest, were
in Chicago for the sixth annual
conference of the midwest sec-
tion, one of nine regional organ-
izations of JWB, which is the
National Association of Jewish
Community Centers, YMHAs and
YWHAs and one of the agencies
that make up the USO.
Roy Sorenson, associate gener-
al secretary of the National
Council of the YMCA, •spoke on
"What the War Effort and USO
have Contributed to American
Community Life."
Louis Kraft, JWB executive
director, pointed out the signifi-
cance of Mr. Sorenson's state-
ment to the Jewish Ys and Cen-
ters of the country. Josiah E.
Brill, Minneapolis ,who was re-
elected president of the Midwest
Section, presided at the meeting.
Benefits Outlined
Benefits in community life
furthered by the war effort were
listed by Mr. Sorenson as fol-
lows:
1. Elimination of cleavages and
tensions between racial and re-
ligious groups, through the USO;
2. Increase of neighborliness; 3.
Rise in concern over the welfare
of fellow-citizens; 4. Birth of
participation of labor in welfare
activities, as evidenced by AFL's
League for Human Rights, and
CIO's. War Relief Committee; 5.
Growth of cooperation between
voluntary and government wel-
fare agencies; 6. Recognition of
need for special work in behalf
of adolescent groups.
Mr. Sorenson stressed the
need for –continuing this work
after the war. "Veterans work
will, of course, be our primary
postwar concern," he said. .

Youth Education

nounced at the meeting held in
the home of Mrs. Albert Bloom
on Kingston, on Dec. 4, accord-
ing to Mrs. Adolph Lichter,

Ships.
Mrs. Lichter's committee con-
sists of Mesdames S. Kalt, H.
Goodman, P. Olender, Harry
Bockoff, Sam Brown, Sol Block,
A. Jacobson and Harold Gilbert.
Mrs. Robert Lewiston, presi-
dent, announced that $250 was to
go to the War Chest and $25 to
the Ruth Alden Dress Fund.
Mrs. Phillip Kollins, raffle pro-
ject chairman, reported that $550

vide lunches for children.
The League's Pledge Fund
Drive will be culminated with a

illac Hotel.

Council for Judaism
Disciple Hits Zionism

PHILADELPHIA ( J P S ) —
Zionists have increased their
membership from 8,000 to 100,000
in the past 12 years "by undemo-
cratic methods," Irving Zieman,
of Boston, says in a leaflet,
"Zionism: A Jewish Catastrophe,"
circulated in the mails and bear-
ing a membership coupon for the
American Council for Judaism
here. Mr. Zieman suggests that
"it would be better" if the Zion-
ists "raised their own funds."
"They have made some of our
synagogues and temples add $6 to
their dues for automatic mem-
bership in the Zionist Party,"
Zieman complains. "For cen-
turies people have fought to sep-
arate the State from the Temple,
but the Zionists have put history
in reverse."
