A boy will give his life today.
He'll die so we may live
In peace and freedom evermore.
For that, what will you give?
Will you help him toward that
cause?
Will you be proud to say,
"I tried my best, did what they
asked,
And bought a Bond today."

TO REPORT that someone will
receive a tie for Hanukah means
nothing, but Dr. Silvan Stover,
who will make Detroit his perma-
nent home, is receiving one from
an uncle in Sidney, Australia, for
the fifth straight year, and it will
be the exact pattern of the pre-
vious three . . . A tie, maker in
Sidney, his uncle designed the
cravat in memory of Dr. Stover's
mother, who passed away in 1935,
and each Hanukah sends him a
new one.

RABBI SAMUEL RUBIN of Brooklyn, being sworn into the
Merchant Marine after the Army and Navy rejected him because
he was over 38 He came from Poland in 1938, hoping to bring over
his wife and four children. Aided by the National Refugee Service,
he established himself as director of a Jewish teachers seminary in
New York. For five_years he waited for some word from his family,
Nit no news ever reached him. 'A few weeks ago he resigned to enter
actively into the fight for justice.

Isaac Franck, executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Community
Council, calls the attention of The
Jewish News to several errors in
the story regarding the Council's
discussion on the American Jew-
ish Conference.
The story did not mention the
fact'that Aaron Droock, who was
absent, sent a letter expressing
his opposition to the inclusion of
the American scene in the Con-
ference; that Dr. B. Benedict
Glazer and Rabbi Max J. Wohl-
gelernter voted against adoption
of the resolution submitted by
Leon Kay on the ground that it
was not official business and that,
as .the original release stated, "be-
cause of the lateness of the hour a
large part of the' gathering had
left by the time the vote on the
resolutions was taken." .
The story should also have
stated that in addition to Council
delegates the meeting also was
attended by Conferenee electors.

Sholem Asch Says
He Wrote Books
As Aid to Jewry

Article in Catholic Pamphlet
Caused Him to Defend
Jewish Cause

LOS ANGELES, (JPS) —De-
claring that he was an artist only
and neither prophet nor martyr,
Sholem Asch said here that only
future generations ' would ac-
knowledge the service he did for
the Jewish people by writing
"The Nazarene" and "The Apos-

tle".

Speaking to an audience of
writers, artists and civic leaders
at a farewell• reception given in
his honor on the eve of his de=
parture for the. East by Rabbi Ja-
cob Sonderling of the Society of
Jewish CUlture, Sholem Asch de-
nied that his purpose in writing
the novels was any other than
an artistic one and stated that
he neither sought to conveit 'Jews
to. Christianity •nor Gentiles to
Judaism.
"Fifteen years ago," he said,
"I came across a publicatiom - of
the Catholic Church on the
Mass. Among the many illustra-
tions in that book there_ was a
photograph of a poor Paleatiraan-
Jew, with payes and beard, 'and.
the captiorl.said that this.Was• the
Scribe and the Pharisee that
persecuted Christ. It Was.:,-then
that I determined, to write:' the
life of ::Jesus: and; Paul, Ict
that this -,,,poor little Jew•
more spirituality and religion
than all of the Catholiq''. and
PrOtestant churches put togethet.
"I found in the Mass that with
the exception of one prayer; 'the
rest of the prayers were taken

from the psalms."
