Eugene Friedman, 23, was killed in action on the Isl- and of Leyte on Oct, 20. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius - - "%3Friedman of `Ilene Ave. A --graduate of Cooley High School, he at :tended the Uni- versity of Mich- igan several years and was employed at the Artcrest Manu- facturing Co. ' in Lt. Friedman Chicago before enlisting in June of 1942. After completing his basic training, he was sent to the officers training school at Ft. Sill, Okla., 'where he was commissioned in January of 1943. He was shipped over-, seas in March, 1943 and was in the Pacific area since then. A brother, EM 3/c Donald, is serving with the navy in the T/5 Cpl. Ernest R. Ba- Pacific. Samuel Rubber, chairman of the Detroit Army and Navy Committee of the Jewish Welfare. Board, and Myron Keys, chairman of the JWB War Records Committee, this week renewed the call to Detroit Jews to assist in complet- ing the available records of Detroit - Jews in the armed forces. Rubin Wounded at Leyte A veteran of the' African cam- paign who was transferred to the South Pacific, Pfc. Max Rubin, 22, was wounded during the early days of Gen. Mac- Arthur's invasion of the central Philippines, it was learned here this week. Pfc. Rubin was wounded on Leyte on Oct. 20, his mother, Mrs. Ida Rubin of 1601 Blaine, was informed by the war depart- ment. He was hit in the face, back and arms, by shra*pnel. He was a stu- dent at Detroit Institute of Tech- Pfc. Ribin nology where he studied pre-law before he en- tered the service in January, 1943. He saw action in Africa from May until August 1943. Upon his return he went to Camp Shelby, Miss., where he applied for ASTP training and was sent to Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Mich. He completed his basic training in engineering at the time the specialized train- ing program was abolished. Sent to an infantry unit, Pfc.
