American Committee Announces Plans for Scientific insti-
tution to Be Built in Rehovoth, Palestine; Nation's
Leaders Felicitate Zionist on 70th Birthday

NEW YORK—Plan for the establishment in-Palestine of
a $3,000,000 Weizmann Institute of Science, as a tribute to Dr.
Chaim . Weizmann, renowned scientist and president of the
World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Pal-
estine, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, which was ob-
served Nov. 27, were announced this week.
Edmund I. Kaufmann, president of the American Com-
mittee for the Weizmann Insti-

tute of Science, a corporation re-
cently formed for the establish-
ment and endowment of the in-
stitution, stated that the institute
will be located at Rehovoth, Pal-
estine, the home of Dr. Weizmann
and the site of the Daniel Sieff
Institute which, under Dr. Weiz-
mann's direction since 1934, has
conducted invaluable research.
Plans Already Made
The new institute, for which
plans. have been drawn up - in
Palestine and in this country, will
comprise four departments in
which • the services of eminent
scientists, mostly refugees from
wartorn Europe, will be enlist-
ed.
-Dr. Weizmann, whose discov-
eries have helped the Allies in
the winning of World War I and
whose formula for synthetic rub-
ber has been "mightily helpful"
in the present conflict, was hailed
as a world figure to whom "tens
of millions of people owe a great
debt of gratitude" in messages
forwarded to him on his 70th
birthday.
The messages were transmitted
to Dr. Weizmann who is now in
Jerusalem where he arrived by
plane from London on Nov. 16. in
connection with recent political
developments in the Middle East,
and were made public by a Na-
tional Committee for the Observ-
ance of Dr. Weizmann's birthday.
Chairmen of Committee
• Hon. Felix Frankfurter; -Asso-
ciate Justice of the Supreme
Court, is honorary chairman, Ed-
mund I. 'Kaufman of Washington,
former . president of the Zionist
Organization of America, and
Samuel Zemurray of New Or-
leans, La., are associate chair-
men of the committee which is
sponsoring the observance of the
event. Fred M. Butzel is honor-
ary chairman of the Detroit com-
mittee.
Greetings to Dr. Weizmann
have been issued by Vice-Presi-
dent Henry A. Wallace, Secre-
tary of the TreaSury Morgenthau,
Dr. James Bryant Conant, presi-
dent of Harvard University; Su-
preme Court Justice Felix Frank-
furter, Mrs. Moses P. - Epstein,
president of Hadassah; Judge
Morris Rothenberg, president of
the Jewish National Fund under
whose auspices a new volume of
the Golden Book is being issued
in Dr. Weizi-nann's - honor; Dr.
_ Stephen S. Wise, Dr. James G.
' Heller, Judge Joseph • M. Pros-
kauer, president of the American
Jewish Committee, and scores of
others. .
Noted British leaders who have
commended Dr. Weizmann in-
clude Lord Halifax, Field Marshal
Jan Christian Smuts, who has
I:likened Dr. Weizmann to Moses
and has hailed him as a great
leader who has aided the Allies
in the munitions crisis, Viscount
Cecil, Sir Archibald Sinclair,
Arthur Greenwood and other
government leaders.

Scientific Progress
REHOVOTH, (Palcor) — Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, now on a visit
here, expressed "delight with the
important achievements. in the
field of scientific research" in
Palestine during the war, in an
address at a reception tendered in
his honor at the Scientific Work-
ers Club of the Sieff Research
Institute and of the Jewish
Agency's Agricultural Experiment
Station near here. He expressed
his confidence in "the brilliant
future of science in Jewish Pal-
estine after the war."

Aesculapian Society,
Ladies Auxiliary to
Hold Annual Dance

Aesculapian Pharmaceutical So-
ciety and its Ladies' Auxiliary
will hold their annual charity
dinner dance next Monday at
Latin Quarter.
Proceeds will be used to es-
tablish a scholarship fund at the
College of Pharmacy of Wayne
University. The student to be
chosen yearly is to be recom-
mended by the faculty and will
be selected regardless of race or
creed.
The Aesculapian 'groups have
regularly assisted numerous
charities in Detroit.
The presidents of the two
groups are Robert Schwartz and
Mrs. H. C. Pernick. Chairmen of
the dinner dance committees are
Irving Belinsky and Mrs. Asher

Detroiters Contribute Funds
For 2,500 Kits; Local

A total of $10,000 has been
sent to New York for the pur-
chase and shipment of 2,500 kits
to the surviving Jews in liberat-
ed Poland, it was announced this
week by Henry M. Abramovitz,
chairman of the United Relief
committee of the American Fed-
eration for Polish Jews in De-
troit.
The first shipment of such re-
lief to Polish Jewry from the
campaign in DetrOit was made
possible following the pUblic
meeting here on Nov. 19• when
it was announced definitely that
a check for $10,000 had been re-
mitted to New York for this
cause.
The American Federation for
Polish Jews, responding to a call
for help by Dr. Emil Somer-
stein- of the committee in Lublin,
is continuing its campaign for
funds, stressing the fact that
each kit will go a long way to
help • allevate the --suffering of
one survivor from the clutches
of the Nazis in Poland.
For every $4 donation to the
Federation, Mr. Abramovitz an-
nounces that one kit bearing the
name of the donor will be for-
warded with the next . shipment.
Each kit contains 3 pounds of
fats, 3 pounds of sugar, 1 pound
of cocoa, 2 pounds of farina, 1/9
pound of chocolate, 1 pound of
soap, 3 pounds of condensed milk
and 1 pound of fruit extract, plus
other items.
As many $4 donations as pos-
sible may be sent with the cou-

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and Jews has started a $1,000,-
000 fund-raising campaign to
meet the expenses of its expand-
ed program, designed to "avert
the calamity of post-war hate
movements" in this country, it
was announced here by Dr. Ever-
ett R. Clinchy, president. T h e
work of the National Conference,
defined as promoting "civilized
harmonious relations among peo-
ple of differing cultures," w a s
carried on last year out of- 40
regional and area offices serving
3,000 communities.

Shaarey Zedek Library's
Exhibit on 'Contribution
of the Jew to America'

"The contribution of the Jew
to America" is the theme of an
exhibit on display in the Shaarey
Zedek Library arranged in con-
nection with the 1944 observ-
ances of Jewish Book Month.
This display will continue until
Dec. 10.
The exhibit includes English,
Hebrew and Yiddish books, pam-
phlets and periodicals and pie
tures the accomplishments of the
Jew in the political, social and
cultural life of America. There
are sections dealing with the Jew
in the fields of religion, educa-
tion, music, medicine and gov-
ernment.
At a special Book Month Oneg
Shabbat, Rabbi A. M. Hersh-
man will speak on the signifi-
cance of Jewish Books.
The public is invited to view
the exhibit. The library hours
are: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2 p.m. to
5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Monday through Thursday; 9:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m on Friday, and
9 am, to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Gladstone. Tuchow is a graduate
of Central High and now is a
sophomore at Wayne University
where he is majoring in speech.
Tuchow started his radio car-
eer as soon as he left school.
He auditioned as an announcer
at Station WJLB and immediate-
ly was engaged and worked there
for a year, in addition to attend-
ing Wayne. Charles Livingstone
of Station WXYZ was so im-
pressed with Tuchow's ability
that he engaged him to play the
part of Rudolph Hess in the
radio version of "The Hitler
Gang."
