Federation Urges Synagogues
Observe Dec. 2 As JDC Sabbath

Orthodox, Conservative and Reform congregations in De-
troit have been called upon to observe Saturday, Dec. 2, as
JDC Sabbath, honoring the great rescue effOrts of the Joint
Distribution Committee.
Abraham Srere, chairman of the board of governors of
the Jewish Welfare Federation, has called upon all local rabbis
to devote their sermons on this JDC Sabbath to the organiza-
tion's mercy work, in accordance with a call issued by the
Synagogue Council of America.
In his call to rabbis and their congregations, Mr. Srere
stated:
"Through the Allied Jewish Campaign and the War Chest
we Jews of Detroit have helped the JDC to bring sustenance
to the persecuted Jews of four continents. Now and in the
years ahead we shall have to assume, and assume
an even greater responsibility than in the past, if Jewish lives
are to be saved and Jewish life restored. It would be impossible
to exaggerate the important role the Synagogue can play in
giving us the sense of kinship, the courage, and the strength
to go forward."
