Save the Children!

Here is a report which indicates the im-
portance of sending unlimited funds for
rescue work overseas:
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports
from Lyon that half of the Jewish children
in France, numbering at least 15,000, are
lost; that 13,000 of them were either killed
Or deported from the occupied zone and 2,000
met a similar fate in. the Vichy area.
OSE, the Jewish health society, has cared
for those who were rescued. OSE took care
Of 5,000 children in the occupied area and
1,000 'in. the Vichy territory, and sent 1,500
children to Switzerland. Of the 15,000 chil-
dren who remain, at least . half have lost
their parents through death' or deportation,
and they are now left to the :mercy of Jews
in democratic countries, mainly"those in the
'United States.
War Chest funds go to help :these unfor-
tunates through the United Jewish Appeal.
The assistance given there must not be re-
duced. We must give everything we can to
Save their lives and to provide them with a
decent future. It is the least that can be done
in the great effort now at hand to restore
decency in the world.

Is it true that a Jewish explorer once led
a Zulu army in the country now known as
Natal? S. S. W.
The person to whom you refer was Nathaniel
Isaacs, who was born in Canterbury in 1808 and
died in West Africa some time after 1858. He be-
came known as an explorer early in his life and
traveled in the Zulu country, now Natal, from
1825 to 1832. Leading a Zulu army, he was made
a chief and granted a large area of land. After-
ward, he went to West Africa where he traded
and is believed to have died on an island in the
Gulf of Guinea. In his book, "Travels in Eastern
Africa," published in 1836, he gave a first account
of the geography and ethnography of Natal.

A Jewish Hospital for Detroit

The leading news story in this issue of The Jewish
News, announcing the inauguration of a drive for the estab-
lishment of a Jewish hospital in Detroit, points to the real-
ization of a hope that has been entertained by our commun-
ity for nearly 40 years.
With an important committee representing the Jewish
Welfare Federation of Detroit serving as the central spon-
soring body for the hospital movement, we may well speak
with certainty of the early creation of a fund large enough
to assure the building of a hospital which will be a credit
to Detroit Jewry.
There is reason to believe that a large sum of money will
be made available for a hospital when the drive for funds
commences in February. The availability of funds from ex-
isting organizations and from foundations will surely boost
the amount sought to the desired goal.
February of 1945 will be a history-making month since
the effort to be inaugurated at that time will surely lead to
the formation of the Detroit Jewish hospital which has been
propagated for so many years.

Dear Boys and Girls:
This week's column is being devoted to a call
to all of you to become affiliated with the Young
Judaea junior Zionist .moverrient.
Lt. Henry Ehrlich has written a most interest-
ing statement which should be read by old. and
young alike.
Henry has just been discharged honorably from
the army, after contracting illness during a long
service to this country and in the Panama region.
His father, the _late Joseph H. Ehrlich, in whose
memory a forest has been planted in Palestine,
was one of Detroit's outstanding leaders.
His mother, Dora B. Ehrlich, is one of the
national leaders of Hadassah and one of Detroit's
most beloved community leaders.
Lt. Ehrlich's statement is of great importance.
You must read it and you must respond—and
you must talk to your friends to help him in this
great work.
I shall be very interested to hear from my
readers regarding this important subject.
A pleasant Sabbath to all.
UNCLE DANIEL.

Importance of Young Judaea Movement

By HENRY EHRLICH
Many people have asked me why I was so
sincerely interested in Zionist youth work. A
few years back I could answer this by merely
stating that having been brought up in a home
such as mine it would be a natural inclination
on my .part to be interested in every type of
Zionism.
Throughout my career in the army, however, I
came in contact with thousands of Jewish boys
—officers and enlisted men—whose home en-
vironment and religious and social backgrounds
were as varied as could be. Each of these indi-
viduals had his own philosophy about Judaism,
about Palestine, about ritual, about the Dietary
Laws, etc. Most of these people were interested
in Jewish life. They were vitally concerned with
the method to be adopted to maintain a sem-
blance of Jewish ways in the years to come.
The problem is to make Zionism a living part
of the life of every Jew whether he live in
Palestine or in this country. Paying the yearly
dues or attending various functions throughout
the year is not. enough. To enjoy Zionist work
means to make Zionism an integral part of
your everyday routine.
There is another problem: our obligation and
responsibility to the future generations of people
who will live in America. We must make sure
that they know about Palestine, about Jewish
culture, about Jewish ideals. They, too, must feel
the spirit of Judaism through a Jewish source.
The youth program has been successful in
many cities in which it has been organized, but
in this city, a city with a very large Jewish.
population, we have failed to give our youth- an
opportunity to know anything . about Zionist
work. It is true that the Sunday and Hebrew
schools mention the work in the course of studies.
This is not enough.
Young Judaea, the Zionist Youth Organization,
is a well organized and well planned unit where-
by the sons and daughters of Zionists and the
general Jewish community can become members
of a small club. These clubs have both a social
and cultural program. It is the plan in Detroit
to make these clubs as co-educational as possible.
The Young Judaea organization will be sub-
divided into three units: Junior Judaeans, Senior-
Judaeans and Junior Zionists. All three will be
affiliated with the Young Judaea national
program.
It is further planned that in Detroit, members
of Hadassah, Little Women of Hadassah, -Number
One Group of the Zionist Organization of De-
troit, graduates of the United Hebrew Schools
and- other prominent Jewish organizations will
be the sponsors or club leaders.
The various congregations and Hebrew schools
throughout Detroit will receive application
blanks for - students to fill out. Membership is
but 50 cents a year which also entitles the mem-
ber to a subscription to the National Young
Judaea Magazine. It is hoped that at least 25
Young. Judaean clubs will be organized within
the winter months ahead. Every district in De-
troit will then be in a position to maintain
group clubs.
As a member of the Zionist Youth Commission
of Detroit and as director of the Young Judaea
movement in Detroit, I -wish to urge every
Jewish boy and girl—and every young Jewish
man and woman—between the ages of 10 and
18, to sign up with Young Judaea and become a
member of a club that will include their par-
ticular age group. To the Zionist homes in
particular I make this appeal. Let's give our
Detroit Jewish youth the full advantage of
learning Zionism while they are young and
allow them to enjoy the companionship of other
Jewish people their age in being a part of .
Zionist movement here in the United Stt
es.
