Answers to Readers'
Questions About Jews
The Sixth War Loan will commence on
Monday.
We are now engaged in the earnest busi-
ness of winning a terrible war and of put-
ting an end to tyranny.
What is the ceremony of Keriah at Jewish
funerals?
—S. L.
Keriah is the cutting of the mourner's gar-
ments by a close relative of the deceased as a
token of bereavement. After tearing the garment,
each of the bereaved recites the prayer of resigna-
tion: "Blessed Art Thou, 0 Lord, Our God, King
of the Universe, the true Judge."

What is the More Nevuchim?—A. W.
•
This is the most famous philosophic book in
Judaism. Translated, the title means "Guide for
the Perplexed." It was written by the greatest
Jewish philosopher in the Middle Aages, Moses
ben-Maimon, known as Rambam or Maimonides,
who was born in Cordoba, Spain, in 1135 and died.
in Cairo, Egypt, in 1204.
This means that every man, woman and
child is obligated to invest every available
dollar with our Government to assure an
early and complete victory over our enemies.
Readers of The Jewish New are urged to
study the record of our men and women in
service as reported in our servicemen's pages.
The heroes of the war, our casualties, the
millions of men and women whose lives de-
pend upon a victory by the United Nations,
challenge us to make all our means available
for the prosecution of the war, just as the
lives of nearly 10,000,000 of our men are now
devoted to the task of winning the war.

The Situation in Palestine
Thanksgiving 1944
Next Thursday, we shall give thanks again
that we are Americans, that we are free, that
we are destined to be the deciding factor in
the battle for justice for the entire world.
Thanksgiving Day this year does not in-
vite extensive celebrations. We shall be ob-
serving the day solemnly, in a spirit of hu-
mility, with prayer that there shall soon be
an end to war, to tyranny and to bigotry.
Whatever there is to be of celebration will
be motivated by the rejoicing in the hearts
of all of us that we are Americans, that we
are free to vote for the men of our choice to
govern this great land, that we are in posses-
sion of the liberties which give us the right
to fight intolerance wherever and whenever
it may raise its ugly head.
May we soon see the end of indecency
everywhere, and may this be the last war-
time Thanksgiving Day.
;
Jewish opinion everywhere, in. Palestine and in the
Diaspora, unanimously condemns terrorism.
This has been repeated time and again, and blame for
the outrageous attack upon Lord Moyne must not be pinned
upon the Jewish people.
The Stern Gang is exactly what its name connotes. Jews
have labelled this small group a "gang," and Jews must not
be penalized for the destructive work of a handful of fanatics.
"Lunacy" is the term the responsible editors of the Pal-
estine Post used in describing the murder of Lord Moyne.
Let it not be associated with the constructive efforts of
the Jewish people to create a homeland for homeless Jews.
It is now generally feared that the outrage committed in
Cairo may react unfavorably upon the Jewish position in
Palestine.
If this is so, then Jews everywhere must mobilize their
forces to prevent harmful reactions.
Jewish policy has never, never been to resort.to violence.
Even in the -darkest days of Arab attacks upon our people,
Jewish leaders in the Zionist movement advocated defense
but never retaliation. There was always a small group that
resorted to violence, but this group had met, as it meets today,
with the utter contempt of worldwide Jewish public opinion.
It is this sentiment that must be accepted as the principle
motivating Jewish actions, and not the work of the destruc-
tionists.

Jewish Book Month
Most unfortunate, of course,- is the fact that new out-
bursts of terrorism occurred immediately after assurances
had been received that American and British authorities favor
the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine.
Will an irresponsible act which has been repudiated by
Jewry be permitted to stand in the way of an amicable so-
lution of the Palestinian issue?
It_ isthe duty of all of us to preyent such a tragic inter-
ference with dispensation of justice.

Dear Boys and Girls:
You should take a lesson from the election
which returned President Roosevelt to the White
House for another four years.
he people of America love our great Presi-
dent.
And the people of America admire him for his
courage.
He was afflicted with the dreaded disease of
infantile paralysis nearly 25 years ago. But he
fought off all difficulties, has held on to a great
lob with determination and is directing the fight
for democratic ideals, even though he has to
move around in a wheel chair.
President Roosevelt will surely go down in his-
tory as one of the greatest men of all time.
We are proud of our President!
