Swim and Relax

By JOSHUA. BORODKIN
Swimming Director of Jewish
Community Center
The ' .11Ner day got into a dis-
cussion with some gentlemen who
were in the pool, and who stated
that they have a profound dislike
of New York, because of its hus-
tle and bustla i- and that it would
be impossible for anyone to relax
in such a place. Therefore, one
would conclude that the city of
Detroit • a relaxing place. If
this be so, it is amazing how
many people there are in this
city, who have not learned to
relax, either in their everyday
life, or even in their sleep.
• The war has created in. this
arsenal of democracy a fervor to
create and aid in the war effort.
Being tense, however, cuts down
on the efficiency of any person,
since relaxation is an aid to our
creative ability.
I never advertised swimming
as a "Cure-all." I emphasize it
as a relaxing medium, creating
greater flexibility of movement
and a state of being at ease. The
first emphasis in swimming is
complete relaxation. So, SWIM
AND RELAX!
Learning to swim can be easy.
Many people have set convictions
and prejudices that they can
never be able to learn how to
swim, stating that they have
tried, and were not able to sue-
ceed. Learning to swim can best
be accomplished with the aid of a
competent instructor. The pupil
must have a relaxed and recep-
tive mind. Two things must be
done in order to learn how to
swim: 1, get into the water, you
can't learn from a book, and 2,
listen to the instructor.
The Jewish Community Center
has marvelous facilities which
would encourage anyone to par-
take in this relaxing and. enjoy-
able sport.
