OVERSEAS

With the majority of Aachen's pre-war Jew-
ish population probably dead at the hands _of
German executioners in the death chambers
of Maidanek and other death camps, the
Mayor appointed by the Allied military
authorities, Anton Stunpf, extended an in-
vitation to the Jews to return to Aachen when
hostilities cease.
Germans in the captured town of Roetgen
declare that Hitler's greatest mistake was the
persecution of the Jews because the Jews are
a very powerful "nation" with great financial
and political influence which makes them dan-
gerous enemies, Clifton Daniel, New York
Times correspondent, reports in a dispatch from
United States First Army headquarters in Ger-
many. "Only five of all the people interview-
ed condemned the persecution. of the Jews on
moral grounds," he reports. The people in
Roetgen denied all personal responsibility for
persecution of the Jews and most of them
claimed to be utterly unaware of atrocities
committed by German troops in foreign coun-
tries. They say the guilty should be punished.
Radu Lecca, former commissioner of Jewish
Affairs under the Aritonescu regime and chief
instrument for the persecution of the Jews
until the recent turn of events, is believed to
be in a serious condition as a result of a
beating by fellow prisoners in the Bucharest
city prison.
A 21-year-old Jewish youth who smuggled
to the Warsaw Ghetto arms used in the epic
struggle to the death between 30,000 Jewish
survivors and the German Army, reached
Sweden after outsmarting the Gestapo for
four years.
