N. W. Congregation
Conducts Services
In Bagley School

Northwest Hebrew Congrega-
tion a n d Center commenced
weekly Sabbath services last
Saturday at the Bagley School
and was gratified to have a large
attendance of men, women and
children.
Max Goldsmith, first vice-pres-
ident of the congregation, con-
ducted the services. A summary
of the history of the new con-
gregation was given by the presi-
dent, Alex Moss.
Plans for the continuation of
the Sabbath services were made
at a meeting of the board and
committees at the home of David
Tchor of Pennington Drive.
Arrangements are being made
to establish a Sunday School, to
form Boy and Girl Scout Troops
and- a junior congregation.
Demonstration of the congrega-
tion's growth was evidenced by
the contribution of $2,359 to the
Vaad Hahatzalah by members.

gregation may be secured by

DR. DAVIN SCHOENBERGER

this country, Dr. Davin Schoen-.
berger, now serving as Rabbi of
Congregation Beth Jacob, Pon-
tiac, made an interesting state-
ment to The Jewish News.
Dr. Schoenberger describes the
Aachen congregation as having
served 1,400 including small sur-
rounding communities. He stated:
"T h e denomination of our
members was liberal, a shade
between Conservative and Re-
form, as we know them in the
U. S. In the eighth century, fa-
vored by Charlemagne, there
were Jews in Aachen (Aix-La--
Chapelle). The warm springs of
Aachen, which compared favor-
ably with Weisbaden and Kals-
bad, attracted the emperor and
he made the city his home.
Charlemagne in 797 received in
solemn audience the Jew Isaac
who brought a valuable report
from the Caliph Haroun Alra•
shid.
"In modern -times Aachen was
famous for its cloth factories. The
Nazis changed ownership of fac-
tories which for centuries be-
longed to Jewish families.
"Together with the burning of
the Aachen synagogue by t h e
Nazis went the radical desolation
of the Jewish community. Nearly
90 per cent of the Jews were
sent to murderous torment in
Nazi concentration camps. The
once flourishing Jewish commu-
nity ceased to exist in Novem-
ber, 1938.
"Now, in 1944, after six years,
the Nazi foe has been driven
from __achen and Jewish preach-
ing again is heard, with Ameri-
can soldiers rededicating t h e
martyred spot to its holy pur-
pose."

Mrs. S. Wasserman, wife of
the Dean of Yeshivath Beth Ye-
hudah, has been placed in charge
of an advanc6d girls' class of the
Beth Jacob school, maintained
by the Ladies of the Yeshivah.
Pupils, ranging in age from 12
to 14, study Chumosh, Hebrew
and Yiddish languages, Jewish
history and religious laws, 4:30
to 6:30 every weekday, and Sun-
day mornings.
Because of the crowded facili-
ties at the Yeshivah building on
Dexter and Cortland, and the
temporary Beth Jacob school
quarters, 12330 Dexter, this new
class meets at the Young Israel
Bldg., 2691 Joy Road.
Elementary classes of the girls'
school, which follow the tradition
of the Beth Jacob movement in
Europe and in Palestine, meet
regularly in the Dexter location,
