Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baumgarten of Hillsdale, Mich., to the

The largest single individual
gift ever received by Bnai Brith
in its 101-year history, the con-
tribution from Mr. and Mrs.
Baumgarten will be used to build
the Joseph and Gertrude Baum-
garten House of the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation at Northwest-
ern University. Mr. Baumgarten
indicated that this gift Was "only
a down payment" on the Baum-
garten House and that he and
Mrs.. Baumgarten would add to
their contribution to provide for
furnishing the house.
Aimed to Encourage Sons
The H i 11 e I Foundation at
Northwestern University is one
of 118 Hillel Foundations and
Counselorships maintained b y
Bnai Brith on as many college
and university campuses in the
United States and Canada as
center of religious, cultural and
social activity for Jewish stu-
dents.
In announcing the record gift
of the Baurngartens, Mr. Monsky
revealed that they were stimu-:
lated to make this contribution
by a desire to encourage their
sons to take an active interest in
Jewish affairs.
One of the Baumgarten boys is
in the army and the other is about
to . be graduated from Culver
Military Academy. The latter son
is likely to attend a college where
there is a Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dation.

Credit for interesting the
Baumgartens in the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundatioins belongs to
Isaac Wagner of Chicago, presi-
dent of Bnai Brith's District
Grancl, Lodge No. 6, and David
Golden, Mr. Baun-igarten's broth-
er-in-law, also a Ben Brith.
Mr. Baumgarten, who is the
head of thte Hillsdale Manufac-
turing Company, has lived in
Hillsdale, Mich., for 18 years,
having moved there from Chi-
cago. Hillsdale has only six Jew-
ish families, including the Baum-
gartens. Mr: Baumgarten has
been a member of Ramah Lodge
of Bnai Brith in Chicago for 20
years, the same lodge to which
Wagner and Golden belong.
Hinds Begin 22nd Year
Bnai Brith's Hillel Foundation
movement began its 22nd year of
service this month with 48 full-
time Foundations operating in 24
states and three Canadian pro-
vinces and 70 Hillel Counselor-
ships in 29 states and the District
of Columbia, or a total of 117
units in 36 states, three Canadian
provinces and the District of
Columbia, according to Mr. Mon-
sky and Dr. A. L. Sachar, na-
tional director of the Hillel Foun-
dations.
The University of Michigan
Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation is
directed by Rabbi J e h u d a h
Cohen.

Temple Israel Men
Plan Active Season

contemplating an active season
to include a USO Committee' of

At Rally Tonight

Detroit soprano, has been selected
to appear on the musical program

rally which will be addressed by
Vice-President Henry A. Wallace.
Paul Robeson, Orson Welles,
Dorothy Parker, Dr. Frank King-
don are among the prominent
leaders who will appear on this
program.
The Jewish Folk Chorus will
also be featured on this program.
Among the well known De-
troiters who are sponsoring this
rally are Julian H. Krolik, Louis
Berry, Louis Bass and others.

Rabbi Silver Speaker
At Memorial Meeting
At Bnai David Sunday

Rabbi E. Silver of Cincinnati,
president of the Union of Ortho-
dox Rabbis of the U. S. and Can-
ada, will be the guest speaker
at the memorial meeting on the
yahrzeit of Rabbi Meyer Sha-
piro, founder of the Yeshivah in
Lublin, on Sunday, Oct. 29, at
2 p. m., at Congregation Bnai
David, Elmhurst and 14th.
All Detroit Jews are invited
to attend. The event also will
be utilized to honor the memory
of two Detroiters—Mandel Cor-
inblit and Berl Frenkel.
Rabbi E. Finkel and Rabbi
Leizer Levin will deliver the
eulogies for the Detroiters.
Henry C. Keywell will be
chairman of the meeting. A din-
ner will be, served by the ladies'
auxiliary. —
