Urged To Help Refrieve Jewish Property to Regain Loot in Liberated Areas of Europe A program to bring about just and speedy restitution to Jews in the occupied countries whose property was seized or destroyed by the Germans was urged upon the State Department this week by the American Jewish Com- mittee. In a letter to Secretary of State Hull, Dr. John Slawson, execu- tive vice-president of the Amer- ican Jewish Committee; proposed that, "as occupation of enemy ter- ritory proceeds, the Allied High Command be instructed to order the seizure of the records and property of institutions set up by the Germans to liquidate Jewish property, together with the freez- ing of their assets, the detention and examination of their officers and the inspection of their rec- ords." Pointing out that "the Nazi out- rages against Jews have been so enormous" that their mass loot- in ,* of Jewish property and pos- sessions has not received the same prominent attention, Dr. Slawson said that "justice and expediency alike require" that this damage to innocent persons be made good. Our Letter Box 1'251 Suspected Terrorists -II Kellman Commends Us Editor, The Jewish News: I want to thank you • for the 'beautiful paper of so many pages of fine reading material on Sept. 15, before Rosh Hashanah. . Espe-. cially I want to thank you for the beautiful illustration and the de- scription of our Jewish . hero, Brigadier Frederick H. Kisch, by Major Rainier. , I am a little late writing this letter, but I believe it is never too late to show appreciation. And—thank you for the nice editorials and for all the news covering JeWish problems and affairs. . Your paper sure is welcome in our home. Wishing you much success and happiness to keep up your good work. MEYER I. KELLMAN 10924 East Jefferson, * * * Jacob Billikopf Says Hillman . "Grossly Misrepresented" Editor, The Jewish News: During the decade 1924-34 it was my privilege to serve as impartial chairman in the men's clothing industry in the City of New York; also as chairman of their Unemployment Insurance Fund. Thus I represented the manufacturers, contractors and Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. In that capacity, and later as chairman of the National Labor Board (Philadelphia re- gion) I had intimate contacts with Sidney Hillman. My• ad- miration for him as a great in-_ dustrial statesman increased as the years went by. Not only did he succeed in res- cuing his industry from a para- sitic status but he and his as- sociates eliminated from. the union the racketeers. With the exception of David Dubinsky, another superb labor leader, no orte has fought more valiantly and successfully in purging from his union the Communist ele- ments. In their autobiographies Jane Addams and L i l l i a Wald (founder of the famous Henry Street Settlement) wrote with enthusiasm regarding the ex- traordinary services which Hill- man rendered not only to cloth- ing workers but tens of thou- sands engaged in other indus- tries. In this connection I should like to quote from a letter re- ceived from the late Julian W. Mack, United States Circuit Court judge, and one of the ablest jurists of our generation. Wrote Judge Mack: • "I esteem Sidney Hillman as the finest labor leader this coun- try has ever had and as one of the finest men I have ever met. He has vision and true sense not merely of the place of the laborer but of that of the manu- facturer and of the publio in industry. He knows that without harmonious cooperation of all the elements industry itself will get a setback, and if industry does get a setback, labor as well as employer will suffer. • While, of course, he is most keenly inter- ested in the working people,..he, more than any other man I know, succeeds in looking at the entire situation from the other fellow's point of view." It is a matter of knowledge that during the NRA days some of the leading, automobile manu- facturers in Detroit were pre-; pared to unionize their plants if only Hillman could have been induced to head such a move- ment, so great was their confi- dence in his integrity • and sense of fairness. Whether or not one sympa- thizes with the Political Action Committee, whether or not one approves of pressure-bloc meth- ods, it is most unfortunate that Hillman should be so grossly misrepresented and pilloried as a Communist.
