`Cards for Fighters' Fund

Patients aboard a U. S. army hospital train speeding to a port
of embarkation in England while away their, time with a two-
handed game of cards, with the inevitable "Kibitzer." This is the
first part of their journey back to the U. S. Left to right: S/SGT.
JOHN J. HOGAN of New York City, a ball turret gunner and the
holder of. the DFC and Purple Heart; SGT. LEO LIEBOWITZ of
Boston, Mass., a medical orderly aboard the train, and PFC.
WILLIAM DONNAN of Meadville, Pa.

Servicemen on all overseas fronts appreciate the playing cards
sent to them by interested Americans who are providing the
necessary funds for this necessity. .
Without the concern of Americans at home, this necessity
would become an unprocurable luxury.
The Jewish News "Cards for Fighters" fund is fulfilling' this
important need, and the response to the appeal for this fund is
becoming more hearty.
Contributions, in sums of 30 cents to $2, were received this
week, by The Jewish News and through Mr. and Mrs. Hyman
Altman of the Altman Jewish Hours, from the following:
Miss Lorraine Lutsky, Mesdames Ruth Stark, Fanny Karol,
Pauline Kutzen, Helen Storchen, David Bader; Rebecca Rosenberg,
J. Nosanchuk, Celia Zetlin, Bella Kowal, Zager, Pauline Kero,
Fanny Goldberg; Mrs. Dorothy L. Gross, Max Silverman, George
Silverman, B. Isaacs, Ted Silverman; Mesdames A. DeRoven, J.
Sulkes, M. Mossman.
This Saturday night and Sunday noon, during the broadcast
of their Jewish Radio Hours on Station WJLB, Mr. and Mrs.
Hyman Altman will make appeals for this "Cards for Fighters"
fund, Readers of The Jewish News are urged to listen in.

Silbersteins Learn
This Is Small World

Hear From Sons Regarding
Chaplain Marcus and Read
of Him in Jewish News

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Silberstein
of 3242 Burlingame are convinc-
ed that this is truly a small world
after all. On the day on which
they received a letter from their
son, Abraham, a sergeant with
the armed forces in France, tell-
ing of his meeting with Chaplain
Robert S. Marcus at Yom Kippur
services they stimuitaneously got
their copy of The Jewish News,
containing the column "Between
You and Me" by Boris Smolar.
In this columnSmolar devotes a
full paragraph to Chaplain Mar-
cus' activities and repeats the
tribute paid him by the U. S.
Army Headquarters of the Euro-
pean Theater of Operations.
Sgt. Silberstein describes how
Chaplain Marcus told of the con-
dition of the Jews of Belgium,
saying that only approximately
15,000 of the original 80,000 re-
main, and that there are at least
2,500 orphans in Belgium. He
suggests to his parents that the
Gombiner Society and Home
Relief Society, of which they are
members, adopt the project of
aiding these orphans. He even
goes so far as to send the com-
plete address of the chaplain—
Chaplain Robert S. Marcus, X
TAC Headquarters, APO 595, c/b
Postmaster,New York—who is in
direct contact with various re-
lief .committees in the Belgian
cities.

Winner of the nation's flavor-poll, year after
year, is Heinz Tomato Ketchup! Unrivaled for

Henry Abramoviii.,

richness, texture and color, it artfully combines
the blended zest of pedigreed "Aristocrat"
tomatoes, Heinz Vinegar and many a rare
spice. That's why it's America's largest-selling
ketchup—a condiment that works wonders for

everything front stews to steaks!
