'AMERICA

Charges that thousands of "misguided culL-
tist ministers" in the United States :are spur-
ring workers toward 'hate, fear and intolerance
, of 'minority races, appeared in "Labor and
Religion;" a new publication of the Congress
of Industrial - Organizations distributed to - more
than 50,000 clergymen.
• Declaring that those hi the United States
, . "who seek a scapegoat in the 'Jew, are now as
vociferous as ever," Philip -Murray, president
of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, in.
a statement issued in Washington, warned
that "reaction which was temporarily silenced
by the war, is again becoming prevalent,"• and
-"it is not impossible for Fascist ideas to con-
quer America even though Axis military might
is crushed."
U. -S. Zionists were called upon. _by the
•Council •ol the Poale 'Zion . (Labor Zionist)
Party meeting. in Philadelphia to • sponsor a
movement for • the recruiting and training of
American youth for Palestine.. The resolution
. proposed that the Keren •Ilayesod (Palestine
Foundation Fund) and the Histadruth, Jewish
Palestine's Federation of Labor; participate
in financing the movement.
. "The Germans can be killed or constrained,
but they cannot be re-educated to a democra-
•tic way of thinking and acting within a fore-
seeable period of., time," declared Albert Ein,
stein in an interview appearing in the maga-
zine "Free -World."
• Henry H., Klein, New York attorney who
• was: defense counsel for sedition trial defend-
ant. Eugene N. Sanctuary,. has been released
on $1,500. bail pending an appeal . -from a 90 ,-
day sentence. imrlosed by Federal Judge. Ed-
ward- C. Eicher on a :contempt citation. Judge
.Eicher is presiding justice at the trial in
Washington.
Wide response has been registered 'to the
series of radio drarrias 'about Palestine called
"Palestine' Speaks," .now being broadcast by
72 stations•-throughout the country under the
auspices of the Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica - and the local Zionist districts, according -to
ZOA headquarters. The broadcasts, 15-minute
recorded , dramatizations, are based on inci-
dents designed to bring' hothe to Jews and
-Christians the drama of Palestine's builders.
• An assertion that 'a strong - stand by the
, Pope against anti-Semitism . . . would have
cut the war by years," is made by Richard,
L. Tobin, war correspondent and a Catholic,
in his new book, "Invasion Journal." Mr. Tobin
says "A , strong stand by the:Pope againSt the
'shocking anti-Semitism • in GerMany and Po=
land, a germ that turned into :anti-Catholicism
and anti-Protestantism,. a strong stand 'by the
head of that powerful ehurch would have ,cut
the war by years."

Renouneing the assassination of Assistant
Superintendent of Police, T. J. Wilkin -which
resulted in a day and night curfew on the
Jewish quarter of the' New City, the news-
paper Haaretz called for stringent measures
to stop the terrorists and .declared that "the
whole matter - has .. developed into a tussle
against the e police by a gang of terroriSts,_ like
the fights between the Al Capone gang and -
the ptklice in America." Other Hebrew •ews-
papers expressed similar sentiments.

ROME, (JTA)-The suggestion that the U. S., set aside land for
the settlement of stateless Jews was made this week by Sir Clifford
Heathcote-Smith, representative in:Italy of the Intergovernmental
Committee on 'Refugees during a discussion of the refugee situation
with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent.
, He suggested as a possible site for a new Jewish homeland the
island of Madagascar, which he termed "a really wonderful place."
§ir Clifford expresied his disappointment that "only a few" of the
•refugees had volunteered to accept Italian, citizenship, and that most
of them wish : to go to Palestine. He said:: "They are victims of
propaganda."

He added that he had recommended to the committee that.ef-
.forts'behriade to find havens for Jews in places other than Palestine;
. Revealing that he was returning to London for conferences re-
garding the refugee situation in Italy, he said that there were be-
tween 4,000 and .5,000 refugees from other countries in Italy. Sir
Clifford disclosed that none of the refugees from. Germany wish to
return there and only a few from Austria are willing to go back to
that country.

Ecuador Will Admit Jewish, Refugees, Foreign Minister Says
. QUITO, Ecuador, (JTA)—Ecuador will admit refugees and has
• instructed its consuls abroad to issue visas to "Jews of good charac-,
„ ter" who wish to come. here, it was stated by Foreign Minister
Camilo Ponce in the course of an interview with Jacob Landau, man-
aging director of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Mr. Ponce said that he is making arrangements for the admission
• of 300 refugee • children, and. added that "Ecuador is opposed to the
racial doctrine and will do its part in the noble effort inaugurated by
Px- eSident RooSevelt to offer refuge to victims of the Nazis."
Earlier, Mr. Landau was received by President Jose Maria Ibarra
who assured `him that Ecuador will be open to all those who have
been persecuted by the Nazis.

Mexico to Admit 400 From Hungary; Orders Consuls to Issue Visas
MEXICO CITY, (JTA)—The Mexican Government, acting in ac-
cordance with its promise to establish a "free port" for refugees from
Europe, has sent instructions to its. Consul General in Switzerland
directing him to issue documents to 400 Jews in •Hungary permitting
.them to enter Mexico as war refugees.
The instructions of the Mexican Government emphasize that
those Jews selected will be exempted from giving guaramtees of
•repatriation and of being able to pay taxes. The Mexican Consul
General is directed to advise them that all they will be asked to do is
to- register with the authorities within 30 days afte_r_ landing in
Mexico.

Jewish Delegation Will Go to France to Aid Polish Jews
LONDON, (JTA)—A Jewish delegation consisting of Dr. Ignacy
'SclivVarzbart and Anseim Reiss; Polish-Jewish leaders, shortly will
proCeed to France to investigate the conditions of thousands of Polish
•Jews in Paris who are reported to be ill and virtually-destitute, it
_was learned here. There are also about 6,000 to 8,000 Polish Jews in
. Brussels requiring assistance. Dr. Schwarzbart today 'appealed to
Jewish organizations to send aid to these people as soon as possible.

New Group of Jewish Refugees Arrives From Lisbon
PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) :—Ninety-five Jewish refugees arrived
last week from Lisbon on the Portuguese steamer Nyassa. Thirteen
• will reside with relatives in the U. S., while the other proceeded to
Canada.

Including the new arrivals, about 500 refugees have been ad-
milted to Canada in the past six months providing Jewish organiza-
tions • guarantee that they will not become publid charges. Such
- guarantees have been furnished by. the United Jewish Refugee and
War Relief Agencies.

Prof. Bayard Dodge, president of the Amer-.
jean •University in Beirut, Syria, has been re-
ported by IsSa Alissa; publisher of the. Arab
.nationalist newspaper Falastin, to be advising
the Arabs on proPaganda. Issa Alissa, in a
signed editorial, reports on a political, inter-
view he has had with President Dodge and
quotes him as stating that . Arab propaganda
in the United •States must be accelerated, es-
pecially in view of the effectiveness of Zionist
propaganda.
Endorsement of the White Paper. policy,
but no pronouncement with regard to the ul-
timate status of Palestine, was expected -to be
among the primary resolutions 'of' the Arab
inter-governmental conference which has been
in session in Alexandria for over a week.

OVERSEAS

Of the 35,000 Jews surviving in Bulgaria,
40% are fed in public kitchens, and many of
them have remained in the ghettoS, despite
the abolition of all anti-Jewish legislation, be-
cause they haven't the means to restore their
former: homes.
Charles Passrnan, American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee aide in Sofia, has left
for Palestine to consult with representatives of
the Jewish Age,ncy with regard to immediate
measures to alleviate the plight of Bulgaria's
Jewry and to prevent epidemics and deaths.
